DPReview is reporting that users of Google Photos are seeing corrupted files when they look at their archived images. Google says they are aware of the issue and are rolling out a fix.

The affected images don't have typical-looking JPEG "glitches," like lines of color across an image. These look almost like water damage on physical prints - with cracks, lines and white dots. See examples in the previous links and here.

The issue is not just with thumbnail previews. Users say they have downloaded their originals and they see the corruption there as well. The issue has been reported among users on desktop, Android and iOS.

Are there any Google Photos users in the forum who have noticed this?

Petapixel also had an article regarding the situation, and they do offer a kind of solution, which should be helpful until Google rolls out their own fix for this:

"According to Android Police, there is a way to fix corrupted images on Google Photos. While the issues were resolved automatically for some users, others were able to get rid of the artifacts by clearing the cache of the Photos app and opening the affected images again to see error-free versions.

Therefore, it appears that Google still has the original images on its servers and there were simply some issues in the transfer process from the servers to the Google Photos app, with individual pixels not arriving on phones and the Google Photos web app for some users.

Earlier today, Russakovskii confirmed that Google had confirmed an upcoming update to resolve the corruption issue on Google Photos: “We’re aware of the issue and are rolling out a fix. The original photos are not impacted.”"
