I could take advantage of the edu discount, and if I didn't just replace my failing iMac this past Friday, I'd be all over it. (which is probably why I had to replace my failing iMac.

All I will say to anyone wondering whether to pull the trigger - is just do it.

If you don't need to edit photography, or any majorly heavy duty tasks, this is the most amazing laptop.
I absolutely love mine, and wouldn't want to use anything else now. Apart from a PixelBook 2.

I don't think so, Google has been making high end Chromebooks since 2013. The Chromebook Pixel came out in 2013, then updated in 2015 and now the Pixelbook released in 2017...

Also, why was this thread moved to iOS alternative area? The Pixelbook is a computer not a mobile phone.

Not directed at me but I'll answer as well. I don't have the pen as I doubt I'd ever use it and it's ridiculously priced at $99.. Well I guess it's on sale for $89 right now but still...

This was an unplanned replacement. My iMac is the "workhorse" of all my computing devices. It's already 5 years old and noticed some serious slowdowns over the past 2+ months. I ran some tests a few days ago and S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics indicated that the drive is in the "failure" zone.

Although I have been investigating non-Apple alternatives over the past year or two, I was not prepared to switch those workflows over to an alternative so soon. So I ended up ordering another entry-level iMac 21.5 ($999 @ Best Buy) I plan on using the old iMac as a dedicated Plex server (booting off an external USB 3.0 SSD & bypassing the internal drive completely)

As for the Pixel Book, I agree with you that Google seems to "abandon" their branded devices pretty quickly. By "abandon" I don't mean OS upgrades and updates, but in terms of design refinement, visibility, and accessories. for example: Pixel C tablet, released in Dec 2015 and discontinued in Dec 2017.

I never did get the pen. If I'm honest, I don't use this laptop as a tablet at all. I don't even use the touchscreen on it. I purely use it as a laptop. Some might think that's a bit silly, but it's very cumbersome as anything other than a laptop for me. I do often flip the screen around and put it in the 'tent' position to watch videos, but that's about it.

And yeah, that is a concern re support. But so far this chromebook gets more updates than any phone I have ever used period. There's an update waiting for me now.

I only use mine in laptop mode as well and the only time I use touch screen is when visiting iCloud to access files and photos as iCloud.com will not let you mouse click on items for some odd reason.

I think it more accurate to say that Google abandoned Android for tablets.

While Google may abandon the Pixelbook, I believe it to be unlikely that they will abandon Chrome O/S. Chrome O/S is too widely used in education.

From what I understand Chrome O/S is very different from Android in that it automatically updates itself.

This differs from Android which is a hot mess when it comes to updates due to the numerous parties that must be involved.

So while Google may discontinue the Pixelbook line, existing Pixelbooks will continuee to receive O/S updates until the hardware no longer meets the minimum requirements. Considering how light Chrome O/S is, that will be a very long time.

I might try the Pixelbook at this price point. I noticed my laptop usage has dramatically changed. I used to game, edit videos, etc on my last two macbooks. I'm still on a 2013 MBP and it's just been a web browser. I use my work laptop (some Dell/Windows laptop) for work but even that is just RDP'ing to my workstation at work.

I tried doing the iPad Pro and smart keyboard laptop replacement thing but it's not smooth. Your arms get a workaround having to touch the screen to 'click' when in a desktop environment. I could've bought the Citrix mouse but found a regular laptop was all I needed. I still use my ipad pro but just for consumption. I have a gaming PC (1080ti) for my gaming needs as well as consoles.

With that said, I've never used Chrome OS. Can anyone share their experience with Chrome OS and working in a corporate environment (mostly Windows servers and some Macs)? How is the Windows RDP on it?

For those that switched to Pixelbook, any regrets? Anything you wished it could do?

If you don't have any first-hand experience with Chromebooks, I recommend holding off on buying it... even at that totally killer price. (mumble, mumble... I need to set up the replacement iMac, iMac... no chromebook... no.. mumble mumble)

ChromeOS does more than a mobile OS like iOS and Android, but less than a desktop OS like Windows and macOS. Whether or not it would be a good fit for you depends upon what you currently have and what you need this device to be capable of.

I had a thought about the Pixelbook... It surprisingly doesn't run Electron apps that well.

I just got one today. Premium device. So far everything is great. It's very fast. Easy to update. Boots up real quick. Installing apps was no problem.

Some things missing are the Apple Music app. It says this device isn't compatible. Netflix app plays in low-res but web version is HD.

I feel the Pixelbook is a must buy at this price point. The hardware is nice. Some friends thought I was on a Mac. lol.

Tablet mode is great but not ipad great/smooth. Ipad experience is so much better at tablet. Some apps are not optimized for tablet but the mainstream ones work great.

For me, there are a few things that I like better than the last Chromebook I had:
-Build quality: This thing is sturdy, it feels it.
-Design: Another subjective thing, I like the way it looks
-Speakers: There's no mistaking it, these are much better speakers
-Keyboard: The travel could be better, but it's a shallow keyboard that still feels good
-Pixel Pen: I like it more than the stylus that came with the Samsung Plus

Obviously performance is better, but you'd expect an Intel chip to be better than a rockchip.
