Has anybody on here tried Google + yet? And if so what is your opinion on it? I'd really like to try it but I need an invite first. Anybody have any invites t they might Ike to share with a fellow Macrumors reader?

the problem I see with it is the invite only crap on it preventing early adaptors from really getting in on it. It needs the early adaptor to get it kick off.
While from what I have read about it it is lacking things and clearly still a beta but the invite only thing is keeping a lot of people from getting in on it.

A Google social networking site sounds like a great idea.

I'm using it and thus far I am liking it but I also only have 8 people who have me in circles. I have a lot more people in circles as you have to add people to circles to invite them and, alas, my ungrateful friends have not acted on my invites.
I think it brings the identity element of the Internet that Facebook ushered in without the excessive over-sharing of personal information. However, it is not super simple and straightforward like Facebook and it's not cute for that reason people like my mom and people who have a computer only to update their facebook status won't join and I am totally happy with that.

So in other words it follows the typical Google philosophy re design and interfaces.

Lol, I promise you that the tech geeks here will tell you it's super simple too use. In fact, they will probably think it's too simple. I'm keeping it real when I say that while it's a lot more powerful than facebook, it probably will never achieve Facebook's mass following. All contacts are sorted into circles (which Google imagines will reflect context-based sharing) and that's not an ideal format for bragging about one's Italy vacation or newborn to one's entire network. Since Google+ users unlike Facebook users will expect such context-based communication it will be odd to (over)share personal stuff with everyone. The other option is to make it public to the entire internet. I am probably an antisocial person because I could not care less about what my friends get up to in their everyday lives and I am much more interested in having conversations than "liking" stuff and fishing for status comments. I much prefer the format of Google+ over Facebook.

Well there's a plus, then: it might be more intimate, more personalized. Something more intelligent and user-centric than the mish-mash that is Facebook, I hope.
I'm really looking forward to taking it for a spin. The whole "circles" idea intrigues me, at least from what I've seen in the video.
It is more user-centric indeed. Also, since this is a Google product it's hardly surprising that the content people discuss is generated on the internet in general as opposed to within Google+, e.g. at this point other than making your circles (who knows what circles your friends make) you can't make groups and pages for common interest stuff. Instead you will be able to "+1" online content you like which will then be added to your profile stream. What I like is that through the circles it lets you treat your contact like you do your irl friends and this way of communicating and sharing seems a lot more organic to me. Of course, you can still send personal messages to anyone in any circle as well by writing a message with twitter-style @username followed by message in your stream.
The invites aren't actually invites in the sense of what gmail used upon its beta launch. Rather, people who receive messages from Google+ users can find in these messages a link to register, but for reasons no one seems to fully understand not everyone is able to register this way. I have invited people who were able to register upon first try, people who were rejected once or a few times before they were allowed to register and people who get continuously rejected. If you want to I can send you a Google+ message and you can try registering for yourself. Just PM me your gmail address.

I concur with swedefish's comments, it seems a bit more user-centric and controlled than FB.
IMHO it has some missed opportunities.
First it should be smart enough to be able to see groups from Gmail contacts and at least suggest turning them into a circle.
Second it would be nice to have circles within circles, not just overlapping ones. e.g. I might want to have a work related circle which has a project related circle within it. I don't necessarily want each circle to be at the same level.
Third, it doesn't seem to handle those of us with multiple gmail personalities/accounts well. On FB or other social networking sites you can link multiple e-mail accounts to a single FB page, but that doesn't seem to be so easy here.

I'm enjoying what is probably the most secure webmail service available right now, all for free and from Google. Two step authentication is something all providers should be offering.
