I like how simple the google front page is, but that being said simple does not need to be boring. And Google is, boring and old fashioned looking. Have any ideas for a redesign of google in general, and gmail (I love gmail but the design is sooooooooooo boring) you would want to post? Mockups!?

I totally agree. Google page hasn't changed in years. But it's the simplicity I like, and I am very used to. Doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome a change. But as long as it keeps it as simple as it is now. Especially the low bandwidth ethos.

Apparently, there is a next gen 'alpha' version of gmail making the rounds in googleplex. I can't wait.

How about blackle?

Blackles not exactly what I had in mind. I really (and don't get mad) like live search. It looks modern, and apple like. gRR!

I don't use live though, search is rubish and I HATE LIVE MAIL!

PS: I just went to live.com and see they changed their theme, It looks nice but no more apple like aqua thngy at the top.

How about a nice reflective logo and one of those 'beta' stars? ;)

Infact, I think Search is about the only Google product that isn't in beta.

Live.com ewww. It's not even because it's MS, I just don't like that page. Neither it or Google though have valid pages, which is the biggest disappointment to me.

Google does have iGoogle, which lets you personalize a little bit, though I don't care much for it personally. For me I think they should just some simple CSS tweaks for aesthetics. Functionality-wise it works well for me.

Google is familiar.

People like Familiarity.

I don't see a problem with it.

Live Local Search maps annoys me. I don't get the what? | where? boxes.

Why can't you just do the where part?

I am not saying completely change it. Just make it look nicer!

Adding a couple lines of code will probably cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars in bandwidth and slow the site down. With so many people hitting google (search) on a daily basis, I'm sure they are keeping it stripped to a minimum on purpose. Google loads instantly 99% of the time for me. Even on my iPhone when I'm on edge. I prefer that over waiting a few seconds and having it look a little nicer. As far as search is involved, functionality > aesthetics all the way.
