Google’s rebadged HTC ‘Nexus One’ sales slow; Just 80,000 units sold in first month

"Google Inc. sold about 80,000 Nexus One mobile phones in its first month on the market, roughly one-eighth the number of units the original Apple Inc. iPhone sold in its debut month, according to analytics group Flurry Inc.," Scott Morrison reports for Dow Jones Newswires.

Morrison continues, "Observers have also been skeptical about Google's decision to spend virtually nothing advertising the Nexus. Google briefly pitched the phone on its home page, but the link quickly disappeared... Perhaps more importantly, the early hype around the Nexus was quickly overshadowed by a series of reports about connectivity snafus, customer service shortcomings and eye-opening 'recovery' fees."

This Google Mobile Phone Revolution feels more like a catered protest that's scheduled to end at 5. Maybe the Nexus Two?

Id argue its that there arent as many (any?) TV commercials/marketing for it compared to the iPhone onslaught we had when it arrived.

That's a possibility. After all, the Droid sold in numbers comparable to the first-gen iPhone's debut. I'm not sure how it's doing now, though.

To be fair, it seems Google did everything it could to sabotage its own product, from a ridiculous sales strategy to the technical problems, rather than the Nexus One itself being a flop.

That's a possibility. After all, the Droid sold in numbers comparable to the first-gen iPhone's debut. I'm not sure how it's doing now, though.

the other thing is that the phone was limited really to only T-Mobile which is a much smaller network than AT&T. That is going to sting quite a bit.

I'll agree with you on that.

Perhaps T-Mobile was hoping to "make it" with the Nexus One. And then Google turns around and implements a retarded sales strategy.

True, Google hasn't promoted it at all.

Even when people first found out about it, Google just kind of shrugged and said, "Yeah, we have an example Android device we'll be selling".

We have to wait until it gets on Verizon/Sprint/ATT with advertising.

I'm afraid this advertising opportunity has come and gone. Google sh*t the bed with this particular device and has to look forward to the *next* one they'll be releasing.

Meanwhile the next iPhone is just around the corner, not to mention that the spotlight is already on Apple thanks to the iPad.

at the same time T-mobile did nothing to advertise the phone either. With the droid verizon spent millions on a marketing push for it.

the issue with Google and Nexus one is they were ill prepared for what they needed to do to support it.

To summarize that article, Google's past philosophy of release early and make lots of revisions doesn't fit well when you're spending 500 bucks for a phone. You want the one that just paid money to work. Also lack of actual support instead of a forum really hurt them. While I'll I won't count them out, they made some large mistakes that hurt the android brand. Will they recover, sure, but people are possibly less likely to buy a google phone based on the missteps and bad press.

First, it's on T-Mobile. The fact that it's selling a steady 20,000 a week is actually quite astonishing, considering it has no advertisement or even any major news coverage.

Second, it's not like Google needs any sales like Apple or Motorola do. Google's not at all dependent on the phone selling. As they said, they just see it as a sideline experiment... a widespread test platform more than anything else.

I agree with you it looks like another one of goggles experiments and for google things take a little time. HTC I think is doing great things with Android but then again they have a lot more experience messing with an phone OS and really shapping it up. Just look at what they did with windows Mobile.

i hope Google doesn't actually view its products that way. We keep saying the same thing for MS: it's ok, they're only experimenting.

It's a great excuse to have when their products falls flat, and if it's really how they feel about what they affix their name to, then that sort of disrespect for their own product and their customers will come back to haunt them. And looky looky, it already has.

Google needs to get out of this whole "beta" mindset and start releasing polished products if they ever want to even approximate the kinds of things Apple rolls out.

And yes lets look at the droid on Verizon. They had a lot of air time, lots of billboards. Lots of fan fair at the Verizon stores. Jzz seems a lot like Apple. Internet sites asking is the next iPhone killer etc.....
