Google TV - Preorder at $299

That has been the price speculated for weeks. It seems high to me until it proven otherwise (although the 179 for dish peeps is interesting). Not sure why id pay 100 more than a boxee box and 3 times an apple TV. It def comes out of the gate more open and content heavy but this market is just heating up and i wouldnt invest so much now until i see what everyone has to offer.
I agree, you can get an aspire revo for 150ish and load boxee/xbmc/skype and accomplish almost the same thing.
Normally I really love Logitech products, but the first thing that came to mind when I saw it was this old gem.
$299 for this thing? After a bit more reading I'm really disapointed in LT. IR blasters, really? This from a company that practically owns the universal remote business. A keyboard remote? Come on.
I'll spend a few bucks more and get a Mac Mini and use Air Mouse on my iPad.

Would seem to be difficult to compete with ATV and Roku at that price. I don't think most care will really want to spend another $200. For me the difference between ATV and Roku is Amazon on Demand vs iTunes. I personally don't care about all the other fanfare--especially for $200.
this will not work...I've tried this years ago, keyboard with device connected to tv...it just makes it feel like a computer...it's all about the GUI and remote...a plex interface with a boxee remote, would be more appealing....looking at this makes me think I'm buying a computer to hook up to my tv...no thanks

At $300 you can get a nettop from Lenovo with they keyboard remote and an actual OS (Windows 7).

Most people don't want something that looks like it came from the space shuttle to control their TV, they want simple.
Hell, many couldn't even program the clock on their VCR.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this thing looks interesting. Sure, IR is kinda hacky, but it looks like it will put an overlay on top of the HDMI in. So if you're watching via your CableBox, you'll get the GoogleTV interface on top of the cable company's interface. Plus all of that picture-in-picture stuff.

Not sure if that's what I really want. Might be too complicated for my (and my family's) needs. 20 years ago when I was a lot more geeky ... yeah, right up my alley. But these days, I don't have enough brain cells to waste on complicated set-ups.

they can if they're enabled. there are certain tvs that can be told to turn on/off through hdmi. i forget what it's called, though.

If they really want to compete, they cant be thinking in the past, they have to be ahead of the game, and a $299 price point is going to make this a very hard choice over some of the cheaper options out there at the moment.
i generally agree with you. While Google TV is much more powerful and more feature-packed than Apple TV and even Roku, the $299 price will be difficult to overcome for some people.
i tend to agree, but google has brand recognition and like the apple fanboys (me included) i'm sure there are a lot of google (android) lovers.

Yeah, the price is a problem for me. I bought an AppleTV because it was $99. For some reason, that price point makes an impulsive gadget buy a heck of a lot easier to do. At $299, I start trying to justify it, and until it'll allow me to cancel cable, the answer always seems to come back to 'no'.
But I welcome more options in the marketplace, and anything that moves me towards the possibility of giving the finger to my cable company is a good thing, IMO.

Google / Logitech may build whatever they want - will never be good enough for some people (here)...

Yes, but the old AppleTV had an actual HD and other features.
The GoogleTV doesn't store any content locally.
You still need a cable service to make the product actually do something other than browse the web.
Other boxes have Amazone VOD and Netflix for well, 1/3 of the price.
Google just wants their hobby device for 3 yrs then theyll drop the price, they usually follow apples lead right? I kid...
Make mine a 2010 PlexMini with a Harmony remote for everything in the room or just the Plex app on the iphone, ipad or ipod.

It's $299 + $149 for the web cam. Ouch!
I thought it sounded pretty enticing until I saw that. Now it's definitely out of "impulse buy" territory.
I still think that the immediate capability for apps gives them a leg up on Apple TV, however. It will be SO nice when Apple TV gets an app store.
