You can use Google voice to send and receive texts. That's about it. The point of Google voice isn't so much "cheap" as it is "convenience."

i understand that....but ive heard some people that have removed their texting plan ....and just go thru GV

has anyone done that here? work pretty good? no probs?? thx

edit....also....was just thinking about the idea of even canceling att...and just using GV on my iphone as my carrier. anyone hear of that? hypothetically.

If you qualify for the free A-List feature, set your GV number as one of your favorites. All calls to/from your GV number will be unlimited.

The A-List is a little bit of an oxy-moron. It would be great as an $5-10 add-on paid feature to a lower minute plan, but is only available on the higher minute plans as a freebie. Sort of a trick ATT uses as a "me too factor" on a feature to feature comparison.

i see....and ofcourse i dont qualify for that feature.

im sure its nice to have, atleast i have 2 phone numbers now! and one is free!

GV doesn't work like that. It still needs a phone number to forward your calls to. It's not like Skype or Fring where you make VOIP calls. GV just gives you a different number and forwards the calls or make calls looking like they originated from that GV number. Same w/ SMS. It fwds the sms to your cell phone but guess you could turn that off and just view sms through the app or online. YOu'd still need unlimited data or wifi to do it from your phone though.

I've reduced my texting plan to 200 (some people still want to text my real phone number)

Otherwise, Google Voice is my main method of text messaging. Combined with a push e-mail account, you'll get text messages immediately, and you can reply directly from the e-mail.

Think of your Google Voice number like a PO Box for your phone. You can't sell your house and expect to live in your PO Box. Kind of a bad analogy, but whatever. :p

Just be aware, others have posted the text messages from GV to GV Mobile will count against your text message plan.

I don't use the SMS function in GV/GV Mobile so I do not know if this is true or not.

Just passing on info.

Hmm the link is not working..
I just got google voice as well, Im a bit confused on the sms side of it. if someone sends a text message to my google voice number, will it automatically show up on my iphone as a text message? or will it get forwarded as an email?

I was referring to having GV send out texts to your phone to alert you of activity in GV. You can disable the text alerts in GV.

Yea, the link doesn't work.

I've had GV for about 2 weeks now. My company pays my bills and I have unlimited texting and data, so I'm unsure how it impacts your AT&T bill (particularly for SMS). To answer your question, yes, when someone sends you a text message to your GV number, you can set up GV to:

1. send it to your cell phone number as a SMS
2. send it to your email (which you can view on your iPhone)
3. have it as an SMS on your GV account - you'll be able to see the message when you log in on your desktop
4. send it to both, your cell phone and your email

This site will help you understand the functions. http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#

If you click "watch the overview", a video demonstration of the GV functions will be played for you.
