I tried to read some of it, but, could not make heads or tails of it. Has anyone out there studied Google's new policy sufficiently to explain it to the rest of us?

They're going to gather as much data as they can from you, and sell it to advertisers.

Surprisingly, Gizmodo did a good write up.

I've stopped using Gmail ever since iCloud, and I've since changed my default search engines away from Google.

That "good write up" just looks like scaremongering to me. Pure FUD. Google has all this information already, all that's changing is that they're just showing it to you in a slightly different way. The way Giz is talking, you'd think Google were putting all your personal information on some public webpage for everyone to see.
