hineveryone,

With iOS 9.2 it is possible to use an SD card reader with the iPhone.

Does this mean I can transfer GoPro footage from the card straight onto the iPhone? And if so, how long does it take to transfer such files approximately?

Thank you.

I think this thread can be closed. I did some digging on the internt and it seems the SD card reader to lightning only delivers USB 2.0 speeds, which makes transferring GoPro files cumbersome.

I think this depends on what wifi you have.I have AirDrop'd 5GB and it took about 5 minutes over 802.11AC. But Apple sells a micoUSB to Lighting adapter and an SD adapter, too. USB3 on iPad Pro, USB2 on all others.

The wifi is generated by the GoPro (local network). Not sure on speeds at the mo as I haven't got one!

I'm sure OP could probably test and let us know.

I'm afraid I can't. I'm trying to figure out if it's feasible to get a GoPro in the first place.

I'm planning on filming my motorcycle trips and all I can edit it with would be my iPhone.

I received a Hero4 Silver over the holidays that I've been tinkering with. Importing video into a computer from the microSD seems sluggish to me, about 40 minutes per 64GB card. I think there is some transcoding going on in the background as I think I read GoPro files are highly compressed. The micro SD card readers or SD adapters may not be that fast to begin with. But my Cannon DSL recorded SD card's video imports much quicker. Copying files over to internal memory may be a faster way to get them into the device. Editing them can be frustrating for us used to near instant gratification :).

If all you want to do is create short 5, 15 or 30 second clips, you can do that right on the GoPro Silver's touch display.

If you are recording at the best quality, a battery seems to last an hour or two. Using the 4000 mAh Epic batter add on seems to get maybe 8 hours. You will fill a 64GB SD card in 3 hours. 64GB is the largest card they currently support.

I hear there are competing products with longer lasting batteries that can accommodate larger cards, but I dunno.

I recently got a GoPro Hero 4 Session. I have imported video to my computer via the SD card adapter and to my phone over wifi using the GoPro app. The computer transfer is faster, but the phone transfer isn't too bad. It depends on the length of the clip and the video quality. The pictures transfer almost instantly.
