Hey all - Newbie here, first post. Looking forward to being a member here, seems as if this forum contains tons of useful information. Anyway, my dilemma is this: The g/f got me a 4gb black nano for x-mas, which I love!! It's so freakin cool. Anyway, my problem is that I dont think 1000 songs is enough. According to Men'sHealth Magazine's Tech Guide 2006 (the nano was voted #3 of the top 100 new products), they say "expect 8 gigs to arrive soon." So I'm wondering if anyone here has any insight into this speculation. When will a nano with more memory be available?? Thanks.

i say, 4/8 gigs will arrive... eventually. Id open your brand new nano and enjoy the heck out of it. since it just came out a couple months ago and the typical ipod life cycle is 6-7 months youd have a long wait ahead of you if you chose to return it. and dont forget to put an invisible shield on it. best protection investment you can make!!! dont believe the stuff about crystal film, it doesnt protect nearly as well as the invisible shield.

I'll throw in my 2 cents:

It was an engineering feat to cram two 2GB Flash modules in the Nano. I do not think that Samsung's 4GB (single module) has shrunk enough (yet) for them to be able to squeeze in two of them for a total of 8 GB.

I don't see this happening for a while, too. This is fine for Apple, these Nanos are selling like hot cakes, so they really have no reason to try and bend over backwards to try to stuff 8 GB into the hottest selling DAP on the market.

This is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt!

yes keep it, I really don't understand people's facination with the belief that something great/better/faster is just around the corner. There's always something better around the corner, heck I think the hottest technolgy is only the hottest for 6 months at the most before something comes along and trumps it.

If you want to store your whole record collection, and 4 GB is not enough, then exchange your nano for a 30 GB iPod. Don't waste your time waiting for 6 GB's. Otherwise don't worry about the (arbitrarily calculated) song count. I've never gotten anywhere near 120 songs on my 512KB Shuffle but I've never gotten less than 8.5 hours of music on it either. 68 hours of music will probably last you fine until you can get back to your computer and swap it out. Besides, the speculation is that a 1 GB, not a 6 or 8 GB, nano will be introduced. Enjoy the blessings you have.

what about the durability of the nano? How worried should I be??
Hey i have had a black 2gb nano for o a-few of mounths?( i got it after 3 weeks for the relese and i have a not so good memory) I never incoutered the battery problem, screen problem. I t hwvere has some scratches. I then put it in a protective case and it has held up. I have sat on it, it has been droped from about 5 feet, been in the same pocket as change and keys. The only thing that i worry about is the flash memory that is in it. After so long it will not store anything(I have not came to that piont yet). The mini, and video's hare a real Hard Drive so they will get more write cycles before they have an issue, and Hard Drives can be replaces where the flash is a sodered on module.

Dude... your girlfriend gave you a GIFT and you're thinking of returning it? I assume you want to stay in this relationship?

(Keep it. My wife gave me one for Christmas. 'Nuff said.) :D

Yup, Moore's law, you have to wait 18 months. :)

I agree! If you ended up returning it, I can only imagine the resulting conversation with your girlfriend:

GF: What do you mean you returned it? Didn't you like it??? I thought the Nano was what you wanted for Christmas!

YOU: Um.... yeah, but there's a better one coming out sometime. I don't know when exactly, but it'll come out. So I returned it.

GF: So you don't like it.

YOU: No, I do, but....

GF: Is it me? It's me you don't like, isn't it? Am I fat? (sob)

YOU: No, you don't understand....

GF: I hate you! (storms out and slams the door)

Hmmm... I kind of recall being in a similar conversation with a past girlfriend...

While we're at it... consider using the NANO as a cue for future discussions with your girlfriend in maintaining a harmonious love life. For example:

"Honey... of course you look great in black... just like my favourite BLACK NANO!"

"Dear... you're wonderfully svelte and elegant... just like the NANO you gave to me last Christmas!!!"

"Precious... I'd do anything to protect you... just like my MARWARE sport case protects my precious NANO!"

"Sweetie... we just work well together... just like iTunes and my NANO!"

"Cupcake... I'll never look at another woman... just like how I treasure my one and only NANO and ignore all those other trashy MP3 players!"

See... not only do you remind her how wonderful her gift is to you, you even get to do some product placement branding while you're at it! :D

Good luck!

Well.... my wife read the last few posts and had a good laugh! I love the closing line... "I hate you!" Too funny.

Seriously, if you like it, keep it. My wife was wondering the same thing when she bought it for me, but hey, it's a gift. Also, unless you're planning to use a 30 GB or 60 GB for high volume stuff or backups, what's the point of carrying around 20,000 songs? You can only listen to one song at any one time. If I'm going to be somewhere or doing something where I need so many songs at one time, more than likely I'll have my computer right in front of me.

For me, I work out frequently or drive up to 4 hours at a stretch for business meetings. The Nano is just the right size: more than enough songs to keep from getting bored. Not so big to worry about another bump in the pocket.

There's also some merit I'm finding to having several small devices, as opposed to just one larger converged device: lose it, and you lose it all.

Good luck. Glad you liked our sagely advice. :D

If you want to waste 4 days without opening it, do that. You can always return it then if something new comes out. But I doubt it. Probably a new shuffle, and maybe even a new mini, but no new Nano. Dude, it just came out a few months ago. Besides, do you need your whole collection with you? I have about ~120 songs on my shuffle, and a few on my new ROKR, and it's fine.

If they do a price drop, you can get the difference back as long as it's within like 10-14 days since she bought it.
