Hi,

I got a M1 MacMini early in the year and love it so far. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro I rarely ever use now, so I'm planning on getting rid of it, and perhaps replacing it with either a M1 Air or M1 MBP, as a portable and backup to my MacMini.

I'm leaning towards a base M1 Air, as it will only be a backup to my MacMini which has 16GB ram. I only plan on using it on occasion for Photoshop, Capture One and some FCPX. Would the MacAir be enough or should I get a MBP?

Thanks!

The Air would likely be sufficient. The only difference is that it doesn’t have a fan (and the base models have a 7-core GPU vs. 8-core), so it might throttle in extended use of FCPX.

Thanks! I don't want to spend more money for the MBP, as the MacMini will serve as my main machine until I upgrade to the new M1x or whatever down the line. I just need a machine to serve as a backup or portability if needed.

You might consider upgrading the MacBook Air to 16GB if you plan to use FCPX. I think for that application, the 16GB Air would perform better than the 8GB Pro.

just use the 2016 MBP as backup.
It's too slow and I figured the sale of the 2016 MBP can basically get me into the M1 Air, without much extra expense. Also, the battery on the 2016 isn't what it used to be, thus, the main reason for making be think about getting the M1 Air.

If it’s a backup machine, I would try to find a deal on the 8GB/512GB version (gets you 8 GPU cores), which would be fine for the use case that you mentioned. 8GB is fine for those apps, despite others’ protestations to the contrary, especially in a backup role.

Thanks! I'm thinking of looking in the Apple refurb store. Great tip on the 512GB version.

$1099.00 for new, $40 more than refurbished, if new is your preferred jam.
