Hi guys,

I just got a macbook pro on Friday... Tuesday, as you may now, apple updated their macbook pro's and they have the "get a free ipod" deal. I have all my info and apple has there 14 day return policy... So the question is, Do you think it is worth returning the old macbook pro and get the new version??? I am a casual gamer, so would the nvidia graphics be better then the ati? Would the extra 1gb of ram help with OS X? Are the displays better? Also i got a printer with my mac, would I have to return the printer as well? Would there be a restocking fee? Also whats all this "SR" you speak of on this forum?

Why don't you just call Apple and ask if you can exchange it? If you can, do it, if you can't, no big deal. You were happy paying whatever cost you paid for the equipment you got.

I would get it changed

SR=Santa Rosa = new motherboard chipset

There's no reason not to return it, especially with a free iPod. Even if you are charged with the 10% restocking fee, that is the equivalent (about) of the price of the iPod. SR=Santa Rosa, intel's new mobile chipset. It supports more RAM and faster CPUs. There's no reason not to get the new one. Most of the time, they give you a store gift card and don't charge you the 10% restocking fee, so you're basically walking away with a better computer and an ipod for the price of tax.

return it if you can - you'll kick yourself forever otherwise.

I bought it in NH to avoid sales tax... lol. What do you mean they give you a store card, and not charge me 10%?

In the past, they've given me an in-store gift card without charging me the fee. That basically means that I still have to give them my money. If you take cash, then they charge you 10% so that they can take your money. You might have to go to the store for this, as I don't think that they would swap it over the phone.

They won't charge you a restocking fee. Just bring it back with the reciept. The same thing happened to my friend who just bought a macbook from the NH apple store the day before the new macbooks were released. They swap it out as long as its within 14 days. It's definitely worth it to get an updated MBP for no extra money.

I had to pay the 10% restocking fee on mine within the 14 day period.

But it's totally worth it.

Replace it.

Graphics might be a slighly improvement and supports DX 10 and works better i Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris if you care about those.
1GB ram more is nice.
10% or so faster CPU.
New modell can have 4GB ram.
I don't know about the screen.

We had to return it because they didnt have the 17" MBP instock at the store but they didn't charge us the 10% fee and we ordered it online with the gift card

So let me get this straight, you return it, and they give you a gift card worth of 1700?
(1700 is what i paid with the student discount.)

i bought a 15" last week and went back last night and returned it, got the new one and the nano rebate. had to kindly fight for the restocking fee to be waived, but that was done in part because my first machine last week was defective, so i played the "this experience has not been great" card.

the new machine is noticeable faster than the prior model. the screen is much nicer, and environmentally friendly. it may have been my imagination, but it seemed to take longer to get really hot and really hot didn't seem quite as hot as the old model. could've been in my head. i'd be curious what others find on this.

Well i would have to pay $170 for a restocking fee... Thats about the same price as an ipod nano. But i would get an extra gb of ram, which sounds good to me.

Definitely. No reason not too, I'd call Apple first and see if they will replace it free of charge,

I would talk to a manager. Remember, Apple doesn't lose money by waiving the restocking fee - their mark up is already high and they will barely touch it and then sell it as refurbished and still make a profit.

Managers have the authority to waive the fee easily and if you tell them in the right way, I'm sure they will do it. If they don't, I still think it's worth the $170 for the LED display alone.

I would do it, even if I had to pay 10% restocking. You'd make this back with ipod promo anyway. As a gamer, you will benefit from more RAM and newer graphics card.

yeah, with the nano and the RAM it's still worth $170. but the manager can waive the fee if you are convincing, especially if the purchase was within a few days and if you are nice to them.

either way, the machines are pretty cool, and the resale value alone is probaly worth that $170, in the long term.

on another note, push for the restocking fee to be waived. in general, it's a questionable business practice to just roll out a new model and stick people with the old models, without informing them of their choices, or discounting the old versions before the new arrive. that just sucks.

$1800 is a lot of money and i'm personally sick of seeing corporations make so much freakin' money while the average guy struggles. $170 is a good chunk of change in your pocket, and as mentioned above, Apple is still making money hand over fist, so exhaust every arguement and get what you want from them.

I returned it yesterday, and i still had to pay the restocking fee. Did any of you guys that got a new macbook pro have aperture installed? Mine does... I think i may have a demo, I don't though...

I bought my macbook pro non SR on may15. I called my apple store and told them that I was upset and told them that I was not happy with my purchase. The manager told me that I could swap it in for the new one for the restocking fee. I called the 1800 number from apple and told them that I was upset and demanded to waive the upgrade fee, they called the apple store here in miami and then the manager of the store called me back to go over to switch it out without paying the restocking fee. BTW that was more than 14 days, that just pretty much shows you can get this fee waived you just have to stand hard on it.

yep. you are very right!!! it took me 30 minutes of hard [but polite] negotiations, and then it felt great to walk out of there with everything i wanted.

You're a lucky person! I had similar luck when the C2D MBPs came out. I also had bought the MBP from the ADC store, and they're much more difficult to return to (from what I've experienced). Enjoy the new laptop =)
