Hi i just got a Brand New Sealed iPhone 3gs from a friend. Im guessing its from ATT. Now im wondering, how do i go about unlocking it. I dont have a pre paid sim, but was wondering if a T-Mobile pre-paid sim activation card kit would at least activate it, so i can use it like a iPod touch, and just use the Wifi. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Just know that if it is brand new, it probably has the new bootrom which requires a tethered jailbreak. So every time you restart the phone you must have a computer, USB cable and copy of Blackra1n in order to get the phone to run.

Very much of a handicap if you JB the phone.

Wow i did not know this. So i cant just opend the iPhone, turn it on, and use it as if it were a ipod Touch? I dont want to use the phone features, just Wifi. Is a Jailbreak, and unlock necessary for this?

I'm not sure about the jailbreak/unlock being necessary part, but I can tell you that if you are not using the iPhone's phone features, a tethered jailbreak is not such a big hassle. The iPhone isn't designed to be turned off that often. For the most part, you just put it to sleep, and wake it up when you want to use it. For this, an iPhone with a tethered jailbreak works just like a non-jailbroken one. The only times you need a computer to restart the iPhone is when it actually powers off, or when a reboot is required. I've had an iPod Touch on a tethered jailbreak for more than a month now, and it's never powered off (I do charge it whenever I notice the battery is running low), and had to reboot only a few times. While a tethered jailbreak is a major concern if you depend on the iPhone as a phone, if you are using it only as an iPod, it's easy to learn to live with it.

You will need to jailbreak and hacktivate unless you have or can borrow an AT&T SIM, but you do not need to unlock unless you wish to use it on another network.

The iPhone is actually Factory unlocked. Cant i just put in a T-mobile sim card, just so i can activate the device, so i can start using it, as you would an ipod touch without the actuall phone features.

If it is truly factory unlocked just put any GSM sim in the phone and it will work.
