Congrats on your iMac! Got my iMac about a month ago and I love it. I moved my files by purchasing an inexpensive WD My Passport Elite 500GB drive for $60 at Best Buy. It made moving everything a breeze.

The thing to know about the compatibility of these drives, is it will read and write Windows files no problem. However, it will only read Mac files. You would have to reformat the hard drive to be able to write Mac files to the the drive. For me, my main concern was moving my large music collection. It worked like a champ!
