Hi guys, I know that Steam is coming soon, but I'm not really a FPS type. What RPG/Strategy games do you guys play/ would you recommend?

Classic games collection formatted for Mac OS X. There are 8 volumes and there have to be at least 1 or 2 games in there that you will like. Here is the first volume, the other 7 are linked to on that page. I particularly recommend the Monkey Islands, Command and Conquers and Dungeon Keeper.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is great fun if you like in-depth RPG's. Black and White 2 is a fun strategy/god game and Civilization IV will suck hours of your life.

Heroes of Newerth is an addictive DOTA clone from S2 Games, in open beta right now. Also, S2's Savage 2 is free to play.

someone had to say it...

World of Warcraft.
huge world,
you choose your playstyle,
100's of addons to customise gameplay,
average 14 days playtime to 80, then unlimited considering the game is impossible to fully complete.

customisable characters, 10 classes to choose from over 12 races over 2 factions (as far as i can remember)

epic world pvp, 2 on 2 arenas.
good roleplay communities on some servers.
hours and hours of endgame raiding.

just make sure you come up for air once in a while ^^

Thanks for the recommendations guys, appreciate it. I remember Commander Keen from when I was like 10 :p Have done NWNII before, didn't run too well on integrated though. Have tried HON, too laggy though since I'm in NZ. That fusion games looks pretty odd lol, might look into it a bit more. WOW...that'll kill me for sure. I'm hoping for a SC2 beta-key TBH, have always enjoyed Blizzard's games ;)

World of Warcraft seconded.

That's hands down the best RPG of this age. You haven't played an RPG MMO of today's generation until you've played WoW!

Theoretically it's pretty simple, just a bunch of planets, try and conquer them all. But the depth of strategy and quick thinking is pretty amazing.

There are three types of planets: Your planets, neutral planets (gray) and enemy planets. All players start out with one planet, and neutral planets are sprinkled randomly about. Each of your home planet comes with ships. These ships are used to conquer neutral and enemy planets. The number listed on neutral planets is how many ships you'll need to conquer it. You gain ships via production. Production depends on the size of the planets. A simple production could be one ship gained every second. So, you'll need to conquer nearby neutral planets to expand and gain ships, then attack and conquer all enemies.

That's basically it. There are other things like percentage and fleet redirection for advanced usage but it's pretty simple and addicting once you play a few matches. I believe there's a free demo that lacks multiplayer.

EDIT: For the record I am not associated with the developer, I'm just a long-time fan.

Can you explain how Steam on mac will allow us to play L4D2 in OSX, something which I've been confused about for a while :p.

Valve has stated many times that all of the games that they offer are going to run natively in OSX. This includes LFD 1/2, The entire Half Life Series, Team Fortress 2, and Portal.

Another vote here for World of Warcraft. Best MMO hands down. I've played other MMOs, and really, nothing else comes close.

I also think Starcraft 2 will be a good contender as a good strategy game...considering how the first one is still played today. Until then, play WoW as an RPG.

The Blizzard successor to Starcraft (Warcraft 3) is not that great as a strategy game imo but it does offer some unique styles of gameplay as people create their own maps with their own custom triggers and whatnot enabling many types of minigames that appeal to a lot of online gaming fans. My favorite was this one called "Sheep Tag" which had nothing to do with warcraft gameplay. You basically play sheep or wolf and run away or catch the other players. And you can build walls, destroy them, get powerups and traps and do cunning things in order to win the game for either the sheep or wolf team. I played so many Sheep Tag games. :)

This brings back memories... :)

Not that great as a strategy game? WC3 is packed full of strategic elements, from hero choices to army builds to tech choices and so forth. There's definitely more of a focus on unit micromanagement than in Starcraft, but the addition of more tactical elements don't detract from the strategic elements.

Of course, if pure strategy is what you're going for, it's pretty much impossible to beat Civilization 4. A wonderful game with a ridiculous number of strategic elements while somehow managing to avoid drowning you in them.

If you want a teaser, there is a free online version called Intergalactics that almost single-handedly caused me to fail my spring semester in college :)

My own recommendation is Myth II: Soulblighter. It's over 10 years old at this point, but it's still one of the best games I've played.

World of Warcraft is an obvious choice for anyone interested in MMOs, RPGs, or better yet the combination thereof. I played intermittently for 5 years, logging close to 400 days /played (yes, over 9000 hours logged in). My mistake was that I joined a hardcore raiding guild, and identified with my in-game success, so it became a serious habit in that regard. I managed to pull myself away when my guild finally broke apart, but I still think about it way more than I should, almost a year after quitting. Only reason I'm sharing this is as a warning: it can become an extreme addiction for some people. A little less so with WoTLK, as it takes less work to achieve the same level of success as in pre-BC WoW, but still.

Anyway, a very fun and polished game I just re-discovered is DEFCON: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/defcon/

I love the atmosphere and visual style of it, and it's a great game to play in short sessions over a longer period of time.

I presume that if you’re mentioning Steam, you have multi-player games in mind. After all, it’s like an online community right? Otherwise you can just go to the store. I don’t know why people are listing all these single player games. Not that they don’t have appeal as some are very good, especially if you’re into stories and all. But strategy games are much nicer online in this day and age. I mean, no matter which way you put it, the computer is pretty retarded. So you won’t really get much replay value from beating it over and over again once you got the hang of it.
