Got bored, made my own ipad case

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been on the forums since the first gen iphone came out, doesn't that feel like a billion years ago?

Anyway, I just bought my ipad, and seeing as the cases were a bit pricey/boring, I decided to make my own and figured I'd pass along the instructions to you guys.

Yeah, it is pretty ugly, so I'm already working on version two, but for less than a buck, it does the job :)

Awesome! Nice work. You should check out the duct tape in different colors. They even have some with patterns - saw it at JoAnn's or Michael's as I recall.
 
See the link he provided. It's wrapped around packing foam. Should provide at least as much protection as your average sleeve.

For the next one, I am thinking for a bit more protection, but I want to keep the costs low- maybe force myself to stick to anything I can find in the mailroom?
 
The duct tape case is nice but I like that last one the book case
Looks like it might be hard to find a book that would be fitting an iPad

Wow, peapody -- *very* cool idea! What a clever 'Pad user you are!
(now why did I not think of using a REAL book for a book-style iPad cover! ;) )

I guess this idea is more functional as a case than a cover -- the advantage would be that it would make it easy to transport the iPad in its original, uncovered state (or, at most, with some very minimal cover, such as the Incipio Feather).

Actually my pharmacy yearbook fits it perfectly. But do I want a yearbook as a cover for my iPad? I dunno about that.

The yearbook does hold sentimental value and I have several of them because I was the editor in Chief that year. Hmm...

Take the case you made, put a layer or two of sill sealer around it, then wrap in duct tape again. You can get a roll of sill sealer at homo depot for just a few dollars, and its great stuff to pack ebay items with. I'd suggest bubble wrap, but that will eventually all pop and be useless.

This is sill sealer, for those who dont know:

Its about 1/8" thick. Super squishy too, but not like cheap foam.
 
Nice! I made a sleeve too out of an old Moleskine that I wasn't using. I tore out the old pages, reinforced to front, and left about 20 pages in the back. The band keeps it pretty solid in there in transportation but makes it easy to slide out.

I bought a hard cover sketchbook like that a month ago for the same purpose, but haven't got round to it. It has a natural brown paper cover - like a Muji notebook and I want the outside to remain indistinguishable from a regular book (for camoflage purposes).

Couple of design points I haven't figured out:
  • How to hold the iPad securely in the book? I was thinking suction cups on the underside thin edge - but then how do you pry the iPad out? :)
  • How to have the speaker play unobstructed, with the cover closed and without drilling any obvious holes?
  • How to cut all the sheets of paper cleanly, and incorporate additional hollows round the switches so they can be operated with the iPad in-situ.
  • How to conceal the dock connector, whilst keeping it accessible?

Any thoughts?

There are how to videos I believe on how to hollow out a book.

First glue the sides of the pages, then let dry.
Measure and then cut some pages at a time.
Spread glue on the inside part of the pages.
To keep the iPad in there - I was going to use foam and line the inside of the book cavity.


I am not sure about the other notches and what not...haven't really thought to p ut those in because I figure they would ruin the look of the book.
