Got iMac 27", i7 2.93Ghz installed SSD DIY and 12Gb Ram

I've just got my SSD installed... pretty happy, was waiting for a Y cable for 3 days :) Now all sweet. The question I have is how would memory increase my iMac 2.93Ghz i7 ??? I've got 12Gb from 4Gb, not sure how to put it on to stress :eek:

i dont see the need in purchasing 12GB RAM if you wont utilise it, even when running 4VMs i still have a bit of free RAM. seems like a bit of a waste of money, but im glad that you are happy with it! :)

the Y cable might add a bit of instability, but for the most part it should be ok.

yes, the Infrared bit gave me a pain, so make sure you remove it before hand... same as for RAM. Logic board is really not willing to go back in place after those screws are removed.

Also, make sure you buy a short Sata/Data cable as space is very limited there... I did not use any velcro to hang the drive but I put isolation tape around SDD as it's Intel and has alluminium casing...
 
Once you did get the motherboard off,could you describe where to find the SATA port to plug into? Is it fairly obvious to find?
 
I just completed installing the SSD into my 2010 iMac 27". I was able to wedge it in nicely underneath the GPU heat sink pipe and secured it with tape.

Theres two SATA ports, you need an angled left hand sata cable (I had a right hand laying around that I used, its a tighter fit since the wire gets bent around again to flow into the correct direction toward the disks). Also, theres the superdrive SATA/power plug all rolled into one wire and then a power connection to the logic board. Its a very straight forward process. If you have ever been inside of a computer before you'll be fine just pay attention to detail and handle everything with extreme care!

I've been toying with the idea of putting a Velociraptor in the 3.5" "bay" and continuing using my Intel x25-m G2 as a boot volume... Could be awesome, or it could be noisy, or it could be noisy and awesome!
