Ok so i got my iphone3g replaced today with what i suspect as a new one. but the firmware is 3.0.1 should i upgrade to 3.1 or stay with 3.0.1 and if i do stay on 3.0.1 will mms work on the 25th or do i have to update. also i heard that once you update to 3.1 you will never be able to unlock your phone in the future even after your contract is up is this true ?

I don't exactly get what your are going at. I assume you had your old 3G unlokked and jailbroken.

If you wish to keep the unlock, then using Pwnage tool to update 3.1.0 is your best choice. You get a Software update but the baseband firmware stays the same.

Naw i got my old phone replaced and heard a lot of bad things about 3.1 unresponsive devices and you will never be able to unlock the phone ever if u upgrade? i am still under contract with at&t but i would like to know in the future i could take it to another carrier. supposedly 3.1 prevents that from what i've heard. another ? is will i have to update to have mms working on the 25th or can i keep 3.0.1? i hope that clears it up thanks in advance.
