The fedex man came a day early today with my new 17inch MPB. I've always been a PC person so this whole mac thing is quite new to me. Anyway, so far I've been pretty impressed and glad that i bought it now.

I love the packaging, I suppose that's just one of Apple's marketing tricks. Regardless, it screams quality. The design of the notebook itself is beautiful. I love the overdone simplicity. That's something I can't stand about traditional (pc) laptops, they always have too much going on. Taking it out of the box it almost seemed too nice to use (i don't know if anyone else has ever had this feeling, perhaps i'm just weird.)

so far hardware wise everything has been fine. the laptop has gotten pretty warm sitting for extended periods of time on a table but nothing hot or burning as some people have experienced with earlier 15inch models. It's also almost been completely quiet, something i'm rather impressed with. i'm sure this will change when i do more instense computing with it. the superdrive seems a bit loud in comparison but that's probably because i'm not used to using laptop optical drives.

i went with the matte screen and i'm still glad i did. it has the perfect representation of colors and contrast for me which is good for doing photo and print work on. i also can't stand any sort of glare, so when i compared the two in the apple store that's what sold me on it. the 1680x1050 resolution is perfect for that size of screen in my opinion. 1900x1200 would be too tiny (for my taste) and anything lower would be a waste of screen space.

i upgraded the ram to 2gb. i suppose this isn't really a design flaw, but for being user replaceable i think the ram could have been a little easier to access. i know it's not something that's expected to be done everyday but it was a little harder than expected. i suppose i'm just used to working on desktops.

i've been just as impressed with the software. so far osx is fantastic, it seems like there's so much to learn. i've used both windows and linux and for me it's the perfect combination of the strengths of both. osx just feels fluid and it just works, i don't know how else to describe it. i've never really enjoyed using an os before now, but it just makes the experience a lot better. sure nothing really beats the speed of a fresh xp install, but for long term use, osx just seems really nice. i'll see how that works out. i installed xp pro on a 10gb partition just in case i ever need it for anything.

so in my case, my first 24 hours with this machine have been fantastic. almost...too good. i'm now waiting for some sort of catch. for the notebook to burn my hands, or to have the nasty whining problem or for osx to crawl or crash, or for the computer to break or scratch under normal use. i don't know, i suppose i'm being a little pessimistic, but for being a convert, i feel like there has to be a catch.

loving this machine so far!

Im glad to hear you finally made the switch. I too was a switcher about 4 years ago now. As for build quality with apple, i havent had the best experiance. Now im not turning this into a bash apple build quality, but some of the stuff they make just doesnt make sense. As for me i never liked the charger as it always broke for me, but hopefully you wont have that with magsafe. As for the quality of the computers i have a 15inch PB G4 and it scratches easily, and the casing of the screen dents easily. So if i were you id buy a case even for home use. Just my opinion. Good Luck with your new MBP im sure itll be an awesome machine.

The PB G4 neither scratches or dents easily if you take normal care of it. I've the first gen alu G4 and it barely have any scratches, but a small dent in the screen casing because I lost my bag and slammed it into a table corner. I've used this machine daily and never done anything particular to shield it from normal tear and wear, and still it almost looks like new.

Different users, different uses i guess. I take it with me from school to home and it dented in my backpack (which has a protective sleeve built in) very easily, so im guessing its different for each person

yeah its all in how you take care of it... i worked at compusa for abotu 6 months when finsihing up college and a guy brought in a 6 month old G4 PB.. He just got back from iraq and it was beat to ****. The casing was very dinging up scratched everywhere but it was still running fine.. I wonder if apple will ever have a casing replacement plan for the hardcore users..

Ive had my PB G4 for a year now and there is not a single scratch on it. However this is one small dent on the right palm rest...i dropped my iPod on it :( I was really upset about it, my girlfriend thought i was crazy.

EDIT: Btw when i say small dent i really mean small, we're talking like .9 mm

Congrats on your purchase! Glad you're loving it so much. The 17" MBP really is just about the perfect computer as long as you're ok with the size for travel.

I know exactly what you mean about it feeling almost too nice to use. I feel that way with every new mac... it's almost like a work of art that should be left in an unblemished state. :) But then of course, the joy of using it is even better...

like i said in a previous post, i was in the same boat. i finally decided just to get it now. i wanted time to get used to the system plus since there's nothing i dislike about the current model's design and performance i felt it would be better to get it now. if it's not broke then don't fix it i guess. of course apple will probably release a better looking case in august, but there's always a chance that they could mess it up. performance isn't really an issue for me, the first gen merom's aren't anything too spectacular in comparison, the whole 64bit thing hasn't really impressed me that much as i've watched it progress throughout the last couple of years (atleast for personal computing platforms). also not knowing exactly when apple was going to release the new mpbs i didn't want to get stuck waiting a month before they could ship, especially being right before school starts. so yeah, i'm happy with my new macbook, everything's gone perfectly so far.

glad your happy! I'm a switcher too! (as of march)... I have a MBP 15", it's great, quiet, doesnt get that hot, etc.. very satisfied.

I put XP on it (bootcamp) but almost never ever use it... I'll probably end up taking it back off, I just dont need windows anymore. OS X does everything I need and more...

Much like you i was a windows/linux person.. I still use windows and linux at work (and linux at home), but have no windows at home... My wife also switched, (also to a 15" MBP).. it's funny, we sometimes sit on the couch, ea with MBP's, and work away (or play away)..

congrats, and enjoy the experience of learning OS X!
