Transferring my iPad to my new MBA has been the most painful experience on what has otherwise been a joy. Curious.

The iPad, having been "paired' with my desktop PC, insisted in erasing and resyncing in order to establish a new "relationship" with my MBA. That wouldn't be so bad if it didn't insist on wiping out three pages worth of folders on how I have my 200 iPad apps organized. What a pain is the rear.

I took the iTunes media library folder from my PC and copied it onto an external hard drive, then imported it into the MBA sans the video files (movies and TV Shows). Those I left on the external drive as I "only" have 256GB....

If you open Finder and in the menu bar select Finder -> Preferences. Under the General Tab there is an option to show/hide various types of thing on the desktop.

Hmmm, it should... care to be more specific as to what you're attempting to do?

How is your iTunes library backed up? Is it still on an existing computer or is it on an external drive? More info and we can give you step by step instructions if needed.

To show your Hard Drives on desktop

In the Finder, choose Preferences from the Finder menu.
Click the General icon on the toolbar.
Select "Hard disks" in the "Show these items on the desktop:" section.
Close the Finder Preferences window.

Move things around = viewing options

Right click on your desktop. CliCo on Finder in the top menu bar and choose view options. Turn off keep files auto aligned, and set the options for how you want to be able to position or keep icons organised if at all there.

In normal usage for me, the i7 does not run hot in OS X so far, but it does run hot in Windows 7. It could be a driver issue, since CPUID reports that it is constantly boosting up to 2.6GHz. I'll tweak the power settings a bit and see if that makes a difference.

I see lion has changed little things. Now you can't do that, so just choose view options and choose snap to grid option and arrange icons as you see fit. :)

You could either restore your iTunes library from your time machine or copy them from your external drive from your MacBook (iTunes library in Music folder) and then onto your new MacBook Air.

I just use the iTunes add library function, and I set the preferences to copy the files to the library when they are added. It puts them in the /Users/YourName/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media folder. Funny, since there is a lot more than music in there, but that's ok... ;)

No, it does not transfer over the iPad backups. I don't know of any way to do this transfer without wiping out the iPad, which has me very frustrated. The wa I understand it, your iPad is "paired" with your old computer, and pairing it with the new MBA will wipe it. You cannot pair one iPad with two computers, and you cannot sync your iPad with a computer with which it is not paired with.

I hope there is a workaround to this that someone can chime in. I already took my lumps and wiped the iPad and resycned. Interestingly, my app data (like my Infinity Blade saved game) came over, so I am not sure how that happened.

thanks for the info!

I got all setup. I moved the library over backed up the ipad(s) and all is well.

loving this little baby!

my favorite part of the setup which i never knew i could do was use my macbook dvd drive wirelessly to the mba to install software which worked awesome.

last few things i need to do are

1- get fusion but which version? can i just use version 2.6 the old one from my macbook or should i upgrade to the latest. buy windows 7 or just use the copy of xp i have and 2.6 fusion just drop and drag the virtual machine over not sure? i would like to start fresh but not spend too much doing it.

2- what case or cover is the thinnest and would add no bulk to the unit be easy to install and looks great?

thanks!!

On any virtualization package, I'd definitely go with the latest version, since older versions can be unstable on newer hardware. If you don't want to shell out for Fusion 3.1 and aren't eligible for a free upgrade, consider Virtual Box. Or alternatively, Nova Development has a promo for another 2-3 days on Parallels and a bundle of other software for $49. I use Parallels myself (got it with a previous Nova Development bundle).

I like the Tucano Second Skin sleeve. Amazon carries it. It's great if you plan to slip the Air into a briefcase or the document pocket of a larger laptop bag.
