Got my new 15" MBP 2.4!! Now what?

Hello all,

Well, I don't have it yet but it gets here tomorrow, latest Tuesday. It's my first laptop, ever. CYBTS?

Anyhoo, I know that I have 14 days to make sure it's all good in MBPtown and, since I'm not as tech-savy as I wish I was, I was wondering if anybody could give me some tips on what things to look for, tests to conduct, etc.

I've noticed people mention checking the temperature and overclocking their fans. How's that done?

Someone else said the first thing they did was re-install everything...

Are there any must-have apps that I should get?

Temperatures can be monitored by a very nicely built widget called iStat, downloadable from the Apple Downloads site. And the fan control program that a few people have been using is smcFanControl.

This is not something that you NEED to do. Apple does not ship a bunch of crippleware apps for you to try out. iLife is a full application suite and has some very good programs in it. The only program that ships as a trial is M$ office 2004. That one you can nuke by simply dragging the application folder to the trash can.

If you need MS Office compatibility but you don't want to pay the extortionate licensing fees then consider downloading either Open Office or Neo Office, both of which will eat and write MS Office formatted documents. (And they're free!!)

Are there any must-have apps that I should get?

don't go searching for problems....just use the machine. You willl be eternally paranoid if you go looking for issues.

Exactly. Use the machine. Then, if you find any quirks or problems using the machine, that is when it is beneficial to browse the problem threads and seek the advice of others who may have the same issues.

Because in reality, the "other" 99% of people who buy Mac's never realize that their Macbook Pro may have .01 oz. too much heatsink compound applied to their processor. I guess they are too busy using the machine.
