I just got my new 17" iMac 2.0 ghz with 160 GB and 1 GB. Got it from Amazon.com because no tax and $75 rebate (I'm a student, and this is still cheaper than Apple academic pricing with tax).
Wow, what a machine. I've been using a 12" iBook G4 1.2 Ghz for 2 years, and I never realized how slow and dated it was. My new iMac just flies. It even flies with Rosetta (10.4.8). It runs MS Office 2004 faster than my iBook did in native PPC. I also run Photoshop Elements 4.0 with Rosetta, and the start up time is about the same as my iBook, but once loaded, the iMac runs it faster, particularly when working with RAW camera files. I'm not sure if this mainly a memory thing (my iBook has 512 MB) or just how much horsepower the new iMac has, even when using Rosetta. It's probably both. So far, I'm very impressed with my new machine.
I also got Parallels and run Windows XP so I can use two programs that I need that do not have Mac versions. I have a Dell P4 1.6 Ghz with 320 MB ram, and my iMac runs Windows faster from inside OS X than the Dell runs it natively. I set up Parallels to only use 360 MB of system memory and to give Windows XP 256 MB. This setup just screams. No problems whatsoever. I'm shocked that Parallels boots and runs Windows faster than my Dell.
This post doesn't really have much of a point, but I just wanted to say how excited I am about my new iMac and just how well it works. It's a beautiful machine and will definitely help me with my work.
