I just got my new 17" iMac 2.0 ghz with 160 GB and 1 GB. Got it from Amazon.com because no tax and $75 rebate (I'm a student, and this is still cheaper than Apple academic pricing with tax).

Wow, what a machine. I've been using a 12" iBook G4 1.2 Ghz for 2 years, and I never realized how slow and dated it was. My new iMac just flies. It even flies with Rosetta (10.4.8). It runs MS Office 2004 faster than my iBook did in native PPC. I also run Photoshop Elements 4.0 with Rosetta, and the start up time is about the same as my iBook, but once loaded, the iMac runs it faster, particularly when working with RAW camera files. I'm not sure if this mainly a memory thing (my iBook has 512 MB) or just how much horsepower the new iMac has, even when using Rosetta. It's probably both. So far, I'm very impressed with my new machine.

I also got Parallels and run Windows XP so I can use two programs that I need that do not have Mac versions. I have a Dell P4 1.6 Ghz with 320 MB ram, and my iMac runs Windows faster from inside OS X than the Dell runs it natively. I set up Parallels to only use 360 MB of system memory and to give Windows XP 256 MB. This setup just screams. No problems whatsoever. I'm shocked that Parallels boots and runs Windows faster than my Dell.

This post doesn't really have much of a point, but I just wanted to say how excited I am about my new iMac and just how well it works. It's a beautiful machine and will definitely help me with my work.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but don't you get AC for free, if you order it under the Education Program? Also, macconnection.com has a $100 rebate (but $25 difference is not a big deal). Again, don't mean to bring you down from your high.

I hope you enjoy your new computer.

running a dual 1.8 g5 with 4gb ram, fast drives, etc. and the 20" 2ghz core duo just kicks the crap out of it...

not really sure what to do now... already moved my quake 4 game and save points over... email and documents to follow i guess...

makes me kinda sad actually. damn you intel...:(

Applecare does not come for free under the EDU discount. It's $120 instead of $170 or whatever the original price is.

I had a iMac 20" momentarily (swapped it for a Mac Pro) and it was a beast, it was a great computer and Parallels is just too awesome, I was chilling and I wanted to see a video in my MBP, when I realized it was not supported under OSX (not even with Flip4Mac) then I remembered I had Parallels.

Apple makes the best goddamn prebuilts one can buy, at least thats my opinion, nothing like having OSX and WindowsXP, NOTHING.

I completely agree. During the last 2 years when I was using my iBook G4, occasionally I had to fire up my Dell and an old Compaq that I had. Apple's quality just blew them away. And now I'm even more blown away with just how good my iMac is compared to my old iBook. The 17" is so bright and crisp, it's amazing! I never knew how detailed some of the dock icons were until I got my new setup!

And having Windows XP is nice for when I need it. I prefer to live in OS X, but sometimes I'm "forced" to use XP.
