Just wanted to share (because I'm so excited) that I got my first ipod today. I got a classic and my husband got a nano. I haven't even unboxed them yet because I'm waiting for him to get home. Hopefully they are ok. Now, I am going to wait to do anything with until my new imac arrives at the weeks end! Yay! Any suggestions for first time users? Is it easy? I want to be able to record most of the songs from my own CD collection...and then when that's done - hop onto itunes! But it will probably take awhile because I have many, many, many CDs...might have to get a second one!

iPod Got my very first ipod today!

Thanks. I was reading about that on another thread. Good to know. I guess it will give me the option when I'm on the computer and have it hooked up. I can't wait! Now I have to get a docking station for my car or something. I do have a USB port in my dash stereo - don't know if that will help or not.
Apple.com does have some pretty easy to understand tutorials on what exactly to do to get music ripped and stored onto your new devices.

get a case for those ipods QUICK. they will be terribly scratched days after you begin using them.
Look into Zagg's invisible shields. They are my favorite.

And you should invest in headphones that are a little better than the Apple ones... maybe the new Apple in-ears will be goodhigh quality sound is nothing without good cans to listen with.

I plan to order a case online this week. No worries...husband and I opened them up last night and oohed and awwed and he couldn't believe he had entered the digital world of music... Two weeks ago at the Apple store two kids had to show us how to turn the volume up and down... Anyway, they are back safely in the box. We should be getting our imac tomorrow and that will probably take a few days of going over...and then to the ipods. I'll just let him know that he can't touch it til we get cases.
you're in for a really great time. Don't forget that the apple store offer free tutorials in how to use your new mac so that may be an interesting thing to consider.
As for bit rate, I record at 192 AAC for most things and 256 AAC for classical and jazz. I don't find any problems with quality but then i don't have super expensive headphones.
Firstly, nice job on getting a new Mac and iPod. Ive had an iPod since the mini was launched, but i got my first iMac in september and love it.
Though i would defiantly suggest that you get a case for it, and a decent case. One that i have had for ages and still looks new is this one
you can also get a nano version. the classic ipod case is called Crumpler Big Little Thing, and the nano version is called Crumpler Little Big Thing. My mum had one on her nano. I think all the ipods we now own (5) have these cases and all of them are faultless. They are leather and very well made and look great with the machine inside them. Also the have a belt thing on the back which also acts as a stand so that you can watch movies on an airplane, or what i do in the car is strap it on to the headrest (in the back) or the sun visor (in the front)
I would also recommend you get an external firewire hard drive, there are some great western digital ones that come ready made for Mac. 1TB is about £110 with RAID capabilities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks) and two firewire 800s, eSata and USB.
Really straight forward to set up. Also try use apple lossless (how ever you spell it) as it gives the best quality.

Congrats on the iPod, you'll love it and never ever look back; considering the extraordinary musical pleasure my iPods have given me over the past few years, it is a technological innovation I am sometimes tempted to class with the invention of the wheel or the development of running water.
Agree with the other posters about a case; I have never not had one, and consider it a very necessary purchase, for protection (in case of accidental falls) and for ensuring the iPod is not scratched, etc. Also agree with headphones. Apple's little pods, while stylish, are not really that good. I have a full ear covering set of Bose - very comfy, and excellent small Bang & Olufsen pods which are perfect for travelling, ofer an excellent listening experience and are light to carry. Anyway, you will have a life time of glorious entertainment ahead of you.
