well today i got my 24-inch 2.8ghz imac

its great so far but i have a few question.

I cant get msn messenger to work and i use this constantly, is there any other software like msn for a mac that i can use for IM and my hotmail account

also how do you remove software you have installed, I installed msn but because it wont work i want it uninstalled but don't have a clue how to

also any other tips anyone has for a first time user then please tell me as its a bit confusing to me

thanks

I tried ichat and it only uses AIM mobile me jabber and google talk accounts, so no msn

Congratulations! You'll certainly enjoy being a part of the Macintosh family.

And as for your question, I think it's safe to say that Adium (free, http://www.adiumx.com/) is the best all-in-one IM app for OS X. It's extremely customizable, it loads fast, it's very stable, I could go on and on. :p

To uninstall an app, simply drag the icon into the trash. Poof. It's gone. Imagine that (*cough* WINDOWS *cough*). :D

ok so if i drag msn from the applications folder to the trash and empty trash that should be msn uninstalled from the hard drive

Exactly right. (well once you've emptied the trash but it's as good as deleted)
Hard to believe isn't it!

yip thanks i think thats it but for some reason msn messenger is showing as a disc on my desktop and wont let me delete that as it says its in use

downloaded adium and tried it, its a bit slow at starting but i think that might be because i have over 1000 contacts so maybe i should delet some

May I just add, download AppTrap, once this turned on, it will rid of all the extra little files OSX leaves occasionally when uninstalling an App, just to keep your Mac nice an tidy!

Just saw your other comment, you have to eject the disc before you can delete it.

msn messenger is showing up as a didc on the desktop and i try to delet it but it says its in use and when i try to eject it it sasys its still in use :S

Go over the msn app in the doc and hold the left button down until the "right click" menu shows up and press close or shut down whatever is it.

I have deleted msn and emptied the trash but that disc thing is still there and i dont have msn on my dock

Oh, go to that :apple: up there and from there choose force to quit or something like that (I've only used finnish OS X) and is there anyhting msn thing?

also one more thing, how do you set up hotmail in the built in mail application, i did a search but couldn't find it

thanks

The disc on the desktop is the installer. When you downloaded the file it was a disc IMAGE, so that's what you see loaded. Just drag it to the trash to "eject" it (though nothing actually ejects). :)

tried the thing for the mail but it didnt work

guess i just need to wait till the updates install then try restart and get rid of the msn thing

ok the msn problem has been sorted :D

well after using it for a few hours I am really enjoying it, its so much easier than a pc and much more put together aswel.

I'm still getting used to it but I'm really enjoying having to use it, just need to upgrade the ram to 4Gb and that will be me more than happy :)

For future reference, no need to restart your computer when there's a program on your desktop. See, it was "mounted" as a disk. Just grab the disk and drag it to the trash to eject it.
