Got the Apple TV 2, Wired Problems

Bought the Apple TV 2 and ran into this problem. Searched all night for solutions, but never found any that would work.

My setup:
Wireless router (Dlink) in the den, computer running Windows 7 & iTunes in my office. I use buffalo tech wireless points that capture the wireless signal and I then connect that to each computer by Ethernet. . Everything works well.

Have the same setup in the living room where the Apple TV, DirectTV and the Roku 2 all use the same point.

So I hook up the Apple TV2 and it recognizes that it is a wired connection. It found my network and the internet. I am able to play trailers, connect to my Netflix account, run network connection test and all is great. Except that even after turning home sharing on on both the ATV2 and iTunes (on and off several times to ensure the id and password were the same), the ATV2 would never show my shared library. I tries everything I read in support documents, opening ports on my firewall, ensuring the correct services were running, etc. No go.

So this morning I unhook the ethernet and try running it wireless. It picks up my library. Can anyone think of ANYTHING I was doing wrong that would prevent the library from showing up, yet everything else worked while hooked up to the ethernet port?

My first guess would be that the Buffalo access points are on a different subnet from the D-Link router. So while you can access the internet (thus Netflix, trailers, etc) from the wired connection on the Buffalo, you won't be able to use Home Sharing because it requires the iTunes serving machine to be on the same subnet as the aTV.

When you go wireless, you're probably connecting to the D-Link router and therefore, you're on the same subnet as the Win7 PC.

I would try putting the Buffalo on the same subnet as the D-Link and see if that helps. Good Luck.

Are you sure that the connection point in the living room is on the same subnet as the stuff in the den and the computer? Since the Directv and Roku just need internet access and don't really access your local network for anything (except for maybe some obscure stuff most people don't use) you might not have noticed it.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with networking but if they on the same subnet, all the numbers before the very last dot in the IP address will be the same.

So if the IP address of your computer is 192.168.1.1, your ATV2 IP address must be 192.168.1.x

I would check that on the computer with iTunes and the ATV2 while wired.

Depending on how customized your configuration is, there is also the possibility that the range is restricted so that the number before the last dot has to be between say 2 and 50 for it to be on the same network.

Subnet was the same, my stuff is on 192.168.11.x . The ATV2 showed up as .180 in the cycle. Even though I have it working, I just one of these folks that wants to WHY it is not working the way I want it too.

Of course, now that it does work, I have about 200 DVD's that were encoded in MKV format to now encode in .m4v..... ah the fun of moving with technology.

Try this

Open: "Network Preferences.

Configure either your Wifi or Ethernet connection to the same ip.
using DHCP with manual address.

My fix is as follows.

Ethernet is configured IPv4 Using DHCP with manual address.
IP Address is: Same as wifi
