Less than 3 months old. The question: Is it worth it to be without my MBP for a week or so, or just live with it.

That's weird, Mine is 2 months old and is perfectly even. In fact, the LEDs under the keyboard should last for hundreds of hours. Maybe it's a bit dirty under that zone? i dont think so though. You should take it to an apple store, I would have it repaired even if it took a week or more. I love the backlit keyboard, I find it rather useful.

Ouch. I'm guessing that you've already spoken with Apple (which is how you got the one week estimate right?). I'd say that you should get it replaced when you think you don't need it. IE, if you're going to go on a trip where a laptop would be pointless, or if you'll be able to use a different computer while yours is under repairs. I can't think of a good solution for you:(

Because that really helps the OP with his actual question

I haven't spoken with Apple yet. I think I'm going to bring it by the Apple store this weekend. Maybe I am better off just calling. I'll be using my lovely PC (build in 2000 and not upgraded since) which will be painful, but make me appreciate my Mac even more when it comes home.

So you're not near an Apple Store? If you're not, then it could take even more than a week. It all depends on how far you are from the nearest repair center. I suggest you speak to Apple about this first. Tell them that your keyboard doesn't light up on one side and that you need this feature quite often. Mention that you bought the macbook pro because of this feature. This should get you better results because the person on the other line will probably have more empathy for you, and might try to go above and beyond for you. Good luck. Keep us posted on what happens.

That's just an evil trick. But it totally works. Don't worry though, Apple has great services. Hope all goes well with your MBP.

I live about 10 minutes from an Apple Store (Kenwood Towne Center Cincinnati, OH), so I'm bringing it them tomorrow.

Not nice but nothing to do with Apple QC if it was working okay when it passed through QC :)

Hope you get it fixed.

I've had laptops in for service in the past, and have usually done the following to minimize the time I am without it:

- Bring it in to an authorized service center for diagnostics and to assess the problem (no Apple Stores in Vancouver)
- When they diagnosis it and determine the part that is required, have them order the part, and pick the laptop up so I can continue using it.
- Have them call when the part is in so I can drop the laptop off.
- Pick it up when the repair is completed.

Doing this usually has me without it for less than 2 days. Less than 1 day for the original diagnosis, and 1 day for the repair.

I'd just bring it to an apple store if there is one around. They might be able to fix it right there. It is either dirty or has something blocking the light. Maybe the led is burned out, or doesn't work, and in that case I would guess they'd send it out for repair :(

seems to me that the bundle of fibre optic cables that run the light from the led(s) to the back of the keys has moved off center, and the ones that used to light that group of keys are no longer picking up the light. have you ever been inside a mac notebook? if so, you may be able to fix it yourself.

It's not an evil trick; it's just positioning. The people who handle customer calls deal with things like this all the time. In order to make yourself stand out more, you have to make yourself a little more "special" than everyone else. It's just business.

I don't trust myself enough to do that?

Agreed. But if every1 uses this "special" technique. Every1 won't be THAT special would they? Most people do that often and Apple just don't care that much about whether it's valid or not. They just concentrate on "providing the best service" available. :D

Looks like an LED has gone for some reason.

I'm not sure how many there is, but a small array of LED's under the keyboard anyway, and if one goes you loose a fair bit of brightness across the keys that surround that LED.

Unusual for an LED to go - dodgy wire maybe?

Well, once everyone catches on to things like this, you just have to become more creative;) Seriously though, I get what you're saying, but a lot of people don't think this way when they speak to customer relations. They believe in being fully honest, and that's why they're not treated as well as someone who "embelishes" the story.
