Just curious, there's an Apple store within about 15 minutes of me, was considering going to pick up the i7 iMac, was wondering if these are things they generally have in stock, and if they honor the federal employee or education discounts in the brick-and-mortar stores.

Thanks!

They definitely honor the discounts. I hope they carry the i7 in stock now. They didn't when I bought mine when they first came out. They said that it was a built to order machine.

I just purchased an i7 27" today. You can call ahead to make sure they have one available, but from what the Apple employee told me today, the i7's aren't big sellers. I used the education discount as well, so it definitely works as long as you have some sort of college ID.

I can't speak to the federal discount though, I would imagine that would have to be done online.

Coolness, I'm surprised I'm so dependent on the forums that I just didn't call the store itself. It's funny how used to technology you become!

Just got off the phone with the Apple Store in Willowbrook Mall (Wayne, NJ)...

They have the 27" i7 iMac in stock now, and they do indeed honor the federal employee program.

So, awesome. I've seen a lot of posts above about "long" wait times - I remember when I bought my iBook in 2004 it took about 15 days to arrive from the time I'd ordered it, came all the way from China!

Now, the big question is am I going to be able to control myself and wait for the next release of the iMacs if they don't get an announcement at WWDC or if I'll binge on the entry level Mac Mini.

It's funny because I'm in the same situation as you as far as wanting to purchase an i7 using the education discount (you're using a federal employee discount however). I was just in the Willowbrook Apple Store this past Sunday asking if they had any i7's in stock and what I needed in order to get the student discount and free ipod. They said I just needed to bring in a student id and have the ipod touch on the same receipt as the imac for the rebate.

The Apple store certainly does honor .EDU program in the store. However you will need the necessary proof. I called the store before making the drive to find out just what document(S) they needed. In my wife's case (professor) they wanted her photo ID card from the University and a recent pay stub.

We were able to get the .EDU discount as well as a free iPod Touch 8GB unit.

We got the iMac 27" i7 as well with 8GB memory which took about 45 mins for them to install.
I did call ahead of time to find out if they had one of the i7's in stock and they had a few so all was ok.

The vast majority of folks in the store seemed to be purchasing iPhones and iPads from what i saw and also by the televised waiting list for those two items.

Nice.
