Is it possible for Apple or a 3rd party to release a GPS addon that intergrates with maps?

I hope Garmin or Tom TOm or whomever is already working with apple on this...

The iphone gives you the expensive scree, edge and wifi and the OS, I hope this allows the nav company to release a product for a much lower price then their current products.

This is how some blackberrys without GPS (though some like the Sprint 8703s do have it built in) can use things like TeleNav for turn by turn directions. Unfortunately for the iPhone, this runs as a standalone app, so would require some blessing by apple or hacking by telenav to make it happen. Neither of which seem likely in the near term.

BTW- Telenav is really sweet. That and corporate email are about all I use my work BB for. Everything else is iPhone.

Sure, it could be something similar to this:
