We all know that a suitable app for GPS is coming, we just don't know when. But my question is ... how big will the program be? Google maps uses the internet to download maps, which is impractical since it's not instant. So any GPS app would have to have the maps already loaded into your phone. So with all of those maps of every sq. foot of land across the country, how much space will that take up?

Why couldn't they do it where you could choose what you want on hand? When you're setting it up, you choose what areas you want maps for.
Why would you want the whole country/world on hand all the time?
If they gave you an option for regions you could choose what you want to download to save space/time and they're saving bandwidth.
So you could initially download the whole USA if you wanted, or just your state or a few states (maybe neighboring states). You go on a Road Trip from Florida to New York, you could download the maps for the east coast. Flying out to England, download those maps.
They could even having a syncing system similar to how iTunes stores your MP3's where you select tagged maps (location tags for searchability) and you can sync up just what you need.

I think it will be closer to 2GB. On my TomTom 720, the North America maps alone are just under 2GB. IIRC from viewing the contents of my 720 in Finder, the actual navigation application is about 80MB. The 720 has a slightly larger screen, so that would scale things down a bit. And I'm guessing that you could pick and choose what maps you want specifically to save as much space as possible.
Because then they cant charge as much, and you will still buy it even if they didnt do that
Yeah, I sort of figured 1 to 2 GB. Good thing I got a 16 gig, haha! It would be neat if we could download maps based on where we live though. If you don't need the entire country at one moment, you should have the option of just downloading your state and the neighboring states around you (like southeast, northeast, midwest, northwest, southwest, etc.) - that'd be really cool, and conserve on space. Of course, if you'd like all of North America, they should have that as an option too.

The tom tom 6 software for the palm pilot with maps for US and Canada fit on a 2Mb sd card in my Treo 755p. It's actual physical size is 1.12gb. It used a BT remote antenna that was rechargeable. It was a full replacement for a navi unit. I hope the iphone will have one as complete.
