GPS as a 3rd party App?

Hi Everyone,
Did a search, couldn't find anything that specifically answers this question. So if there is a thread or simply common knowledge, please don't yell. I'm just trying to learn.

So I know there is talk of an upcoming add-on external piece to give the iPhone GPS capabilities in the works. But I was wondering can't this just be done with an application?

I thought all an application needs to do is be able to get the location from AT&T and then use google maps or other map tool to provide GPS-like directions.

I ask because this would be a huge feature for me and will likely be included in the iPhone 2. So once the SDK releases, I'm hoping someone can come up with an application that can do this for the current model.

Is this possible?

The answer is yes and no, sort of.

GPS means you get your positioning information from a set of satellites, and you need an antenna to receive their signals. The iPhone doesn't have that kind of antenna. However, you are right there's a third party add on reportedly in the works.

LocateMe and the 1.1.3 Maps function use GSM (Cell tower) locations and wireless router locations (only Maps) to approximate your position. These are already available: LocateMe via jailbrake, and Maps via normal upgrade to 1.1.3.
