GPS Feature Inaaccurate

Hello I have a iPhone 3G, and whenever I use the Google Maps feature, or any app that uses my current location, it is rarely accurate. Is it because I am using edge? Or is there something wrong with my GPS card?

The GPS won't be completely accurate...even my garmin isn't all the time....mine usually comes close tho....is yours close to your actual location??

If I am doing directions, it is about 1 mile off. If I put current location in the search one then it is about 30 miles off. I mean when I initially got the iPhone it was dead on a lot of times, like scary dead on.

I spent several weeks wondering why GPS was so inaccurate. Then someone posted a suggestion: turn-off wifi and go outside. It was like a miracle. All of a sudden GPS was correct (within 20 +/- yards). So I've concluded that inside GPS is very bad. Outside (and not on wifi) it is very awesome. This was using EDGE (3G reception is poor where I travel).

Let us know if this is your experience too.

I understand that....I had a different experience tho...when I first got the phone it didn't seem to work all that well...now it can pretty much tell where in my house I'm at. I agree tho that it does work much better outside then inside....you might want to get it looked at tho because there is no way it should be more then a mile off.....

Yeah, it shouldn't be that far off all the time. Mine is accurate inside and out, and was from the start, when it could show in what section of my house I was sitting (that was a little disconcerting, actually). Who knows why some are better than others, but I'd check into yours.

Now, I'm no expert on the topic by any stretch of the imagination, but the original iPhone (non-3G) used a mix of cell tower spotting and Wi-Fi location data to approximate the location of the phone. Perhaps the new iPhone uses this method over the GPS in the presence of wireless networks and cell service. It could be more efficient on the battery or not, I am not sure, like I said I am not an expert. I tend to agree with the suggestions so far, turn off the Wi-Fi and go outside and see what the difference would be
