How many are using their iphones for GPS Navigation in the car?

I am planning on upgrading to the new iphone whenever it is released, and I am also considering purchasing a GPS unit for my car.

I have not used an iphone with GPS (mine is a 2G) and I do not know what is available as far as apps to turn my iphone into a functional GPS unit with turn by turn directions and everything.

What I am wondering is if it is possible to really use the iPhone as my everyday gps unit, and if it will function as well as a dedicated unit. Should I have both, or would it be redundant?

What are the best apps for turn by turn GPS function, and about what is the average cost...

Thanks for any help!

I use TomTom navigation and like it quite a lot. I think it will be awesome when I get it on my 3G iPad whenever that gets here. A 9.7 in map will be so much better than the iPhone, though the iPhone does work very nice.

i'm using iPhone 3GS w/ Navigon (live traffic) and TomTom car kit ... works as well as my wife's Garmin Nuvi (if not a little better) ... either Navigon or TomTom apps will serve you as well as a dedicated device

This sounds like a good solution....especially after multitasking is released.

Ok thanks everyone!

Do you save any money with this solution? It seems like the Tom Tom kit and apps are pretty expensive, and together as much if not more than a separate unit... but if it has a lot of the features of the better higher priced units it might be worth it....

Also are map updates free with any of the apps, it seems like map updates could eat up a lot of money!

I notice that when I use my iphone GPS (with a Magellan car kit) that my phone gets really warm from the back light being on for a lone time. I worry that the warmth will diminish my battery capacity. Am I wrong about this?
