GPS problem

Took a 1500 mile road trip this weekend, and found my GPS to be very frustrating. On the trip TO, it got me about 3/4 way with no problems. iPhone docked, and G-maps and Google maps tracking me perfectly. Once AT destination, I had almost no tracking ability. I compared my 3GS to my sisters 3G, and I had a 4 block radius, and she was spot on. On the trip back, I had about 20% functionality. Fuming the whole drive home, I was preparing my battle plan with Apple.

After arriving back home, I restored my phone, and voila, perfect tracking. Excellent! 24 hours of testing, and it was spot on. Decided to Jailbreak again (which is why I am posting here), and boom! Back to the same shoddy tracking.I have not installed SBsettings, or Springboard.

Anyone else have a similar experience with their GPS??


Also, my battery life is 2X better not jailbroken.

It's been reported that restoring an old backup can cause the issues you are having. When you first setup your 3GS did you restore it from a 3G or 2G device backup?

With that said, my 3GS seems to be good with GPS and battery life. I'm jailbroken and the only MobileSubstrate app I use is Winterboard.

This is provided by Navigon but should be helpful:

1. Please connect your iPhone to iTunes and perform synchronize it. After that please click with the right mouse button on the iPhone-Icon (in the left menu of iTunes) and choose “backup”. iTunes will now create an entire backup of your iPhone data and settings.
2. Then disconnect your iPhone from the computer and connect it to the power supply.
3. On your iPhone choose “Settings” -> “General” -> “Reset”.
4. Then choose “Erase all Content and Settings” and confirm this.
5. The following steps can take up to two hours and more, depending on the model and storage capacity of your iPhone
6. After the procedure is finished please connect the iPhone to your computer again.
7. Now using the backup install your data and settings.
A limited GPS signal can have many different reasons:
bad positioning of the iPhone in the car. Like with every portable navigation device, the iPhone should always have a free view to the sky.
metallized thermally insulated windshield
usage of design or protective covers
While using our NAVIGON Software please avoid using covers since these influence the reception of a GPS signal.

Actually, set up as new device. Wiped everything. I am guessing I have a hardware issue. Unfortunately, I can only reproduce the problem when I am in a jailbroken state. I just went into the middle of a parking lot, and am unable to get GPS lock. Will report back if I come up with a solution.

Restored again, and the gps is perfect! I am going to install all my apps one at a time, and see if I can nail it down.

Looking like g-maps is causing my problem. Seems g-maps starts off in downtown NY. For some reason, I believe this is changing something in my network settings. I have taken forum advise, and reset my netwok settings, and then relearned my GPS position. All is well with google maps, till I open g-maps, and it starts off in NY city. Then I have to reset my network settings to get accurate GPS. The thing that really seems to throw it off is a circular button on the top right of the Gmap screen (Looks similiar to the locating circle in google maps). Sometimes when I push the button, a circle goes around my position, and the beacon goes solid.
Will email xroads and see what they say.
