MP 1,1-5,1 GPU Bad Luck!

I had been running a MVC flashed 7970 for about 3 years, great card. Suddenly one day it "went pink", the screen got a pink cast, then went all white/grey. I restarted after a cool down, and I got the Apple loading logo, then it went full white. I tried re-pasting the GPU but either did it poorly, or the card is fully fried, because then I got the startup Apple logo and progress bar, but it got stuck at about 75% and the logo had odd blocks and artifacts around it. It would never get past 75% and computer never could start. (Thoughts on this error appreciated.)

Got another 7970 on ebay. DOA, no fans nothing. Returned it, but was told the person supplied the wrong power supply cables. 🙄

Got a Sapphire RX580 Pulse 8gb, with correct 6+6->8 pin adapter (Amazon). Worked great, installed Mojave (a little scary having black screen for ~25minutes). After 2 successful minutes in Mojave only in Safari (no video editing etc), screen goes full white, GPU and CPU fans go full blast. I shut down. Restarted, no GPU fans. Confirmed power supply lines on motherboard still OK, back to running a 5770 backup card.

All this for Mojave to run a newer Xcode. Should I even try another card? Thinking maybe Amazon Sapphire so it's not been used or bitmined.

My first Sapphire Pulse RX 580 was purchased new from Amazon and died rather quickly. I got an RMA and the replacement card (looked pretty scuffed-up) has worked flawlessly for a long time now.

I use an MSI Armor RX 580 8gb now but I also have a Sapphire Dual-X HD 7970 3gb.

I got the Sapphire 7970 for about ¥6,000. here in Japan. I EFI flashed it using the Netkas script and als o reduced the voltage slightly.

The only problem was that the fan closest to the vid cable inputs would start for just a second or so and then stop. That puzzled and worried me as where I live in Japan is very hot in summer.

Last week the ( genuine ) replacement fans arrived from Amazon - I installed them ( also re-applied thermal paste ) and now both fans work properly.

What brand is your MVC 7970 ? It might be able to be revived and used as a spare but if it is an XFX don't bother their cards have often been problematic.

My 7970 was a real AMD. Last night after I posted I took it apart, looked like my repaste was pretty nice. So I will try it again anyways.

Have been using my pulse 580 for about 2 years without issue (bought new).
I am on HS though.

Yes .. . but . .WHAT BRAND is your 7970 ? Sapphire ? Gigabyte ? etc . .. .

Hm, well I thought it was direct from AMD, b/c it certainly isn't Sapphire, GB, XFX, etc.
