Hi,

I haver to replace 1 (of 2) dying monitor on my late 2008 Mac Pro. I think of getting a new Apple LED Cinema Display 27".

The problem is the GPU. At the moment it is NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB without Mini DisplayPort.

Can I still find a card with Mini DisplayPort, compatible with 2008 MP?

Thanks!

yeah that's the one, their requirements are on the conservative side, i had one in a 2009 no problem read the q/a at the bottom of that page theres people saying it works in 2006/2008 too. let someone else reply here and verify before you buy but you should be ok:)

OK! You're right, I didn't read the q&a, it seem to fit in even older versions.

apple is lying to sell more machines, there is no hardware or firmware constraints that keeps you from using 5770 or 5870 in any Mac Pro as long as you have Snow L

It looks like even the 5870 could be installed on this model...

I have this GPU on my 2010 MP, but am unable to compare it to 5770. Should I rather go for 5870 also for the 2008 one? This older MP is not being used for any graphic intensive processes.

Guys, thanks a lot for your advices!

I've ordered 27" + 5770, getting a nice discount as a business customer, so the card comes at a half of its price.

I'll post here the results as the parcel will arrive yet this week — but I presume, the card will work just fine.

Thanks once again!

I have the 5770 in my 2008 Mac Pro and have had no problems. It just took a little jostling to get it in. Enjoy! :D

Same here. Great upgrade no problems at all, except once when I was cleaning the computer (we have pets) I needed to remove the fan so when I unseated the ATI card I broke the PCI retaining clip. Still the computer runs flawless.

I've promised to post about the results upon the Apple LED Cinema Display 27" + ATI Radeon HD 5770 arrival.

As you guys said, everything works just perfect. While the Apple's site mentions these cards are for the 2010+ MP only, it woks great on 2008 MP. Just pulled the old card off, installed the new one, connected the monitor -- and everything works like it should.

By the way, what a great monitor!

Thanks once again for your advices!
