Hi,

I have been working on upgrades for my old Mac Pro 5,1 mid 2010. I purchased an open box Sapphire Pulse RX580 GPU and when I boot up, there's a black screen. The GPU fans are running and I get the chime but no screen. Is this because I'm using my old OS 10.9.5 with the new Sapphire Pulse? Do I need to have OS High Sierra 10.13.2 in order for the computer to see the new GPU? (The GPU is on Apple's METAL supported list.)

So far I've upgraded from quad core to six core, replaced the logic board, upgraded to 64 GB RAM, and installed two SSD 1TB drives. I'm planning to gradually get this old rig relatively up to today's standards.

Appreciate your input.

Best, - Mac Jack 7

Yes, AMD RX 460/560/470/570/480/580/590 drivers begin with 10.12.6 with initial support, complete support happened with 10.14.5.

(The GPU is on Apple's METAL supported list.)

METAL API starts with El Capitan.

Hi, That's useful I have my eye on a PC version RX5XX (must check which) if I'm going to install opencore does it matter?? I run OS Mojave on a 5.1 classic. If we get a black boot screen can we install a new card after opencore?

You don’t need OC for Mojave.

Anyway, the major info is that you need to know here is that YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE GPU WITH OCLP.

Change everything hardware wise before installing unsupported macOS releases via OCLP.

Hi tsialex, Sorry I didn't make it all clear. I want to install windows using opencore, would it be best to install a new? Graphics card first, i can get a PC GTX680 and hopefully flash it myself or PC RX580, but I assume that will not give me a boot screen on Mojave (or anything else). My current card is a Radeon HD 5870...

Always install the hardware FIRST, do not change it after installed.

Hi, OK git it, I'll start getting a few bits then, another SSD, graphics card (Do I understand right that it can be a normal PC card, as OPencore provides the boot screen) etc...
