Gradient issue

MAX:MIN brightness ratio = 2.5 : 1 (+/- 0.2) -- or about 1.3 f-stops.

If your machine looks anything like Leons, take it back immediately. You should not have to put up with 2.5x brightness variation from an iMac.

I have a slight gradient problem, well i call it slight, others might say it was a 'bad case', i have had my imac 1 week now, and i have to say i don't notice the gradient issue at all during the day when i'm working. When i watch a DVD it is fine, i don't notice it. I only ever see it when i go looking for it; putting a solid colour b/g and looking at the screen from all angles.
I really could take it back and get it exchanged, but i've spent all week installing software and setting up my computer settings and i'm not sure i can be bothered to go through all that again. And what's to say i won't get one that is just as bad, or worse!?
What should i do?
Also, can we PLEASE make a sticky at the top of the forum on the gradient issue so people know how to look for it and what to do if they have it. Do i contact a mod to have them set up a sticky?

I was in exactly your predicament fluidedge - bought one last weekend with a slight gradient problem.
I decided to return it today after showing it to several friends - they all noticed the gradient. It didn't look quite as bad as in Leon's picture, but as others have reported getting perfect screens I didn't want to settle for anything less.
When I took it back to the store they opened up another for me to look at - it had the same problem. I think I'm going to wait until after they next get speedbumped (hopefully with updated graphics cards) to see if there are fewer reported problems by then.

looking at that photo, i think mine is as bad as that. I've just had a second opinion and while they didn't spot it straight away, once we had our eyes adjusted to it we could spot every example we threw at it.

I live about 20 miles away from an apple store - i bought it online, will it be ok to take it back there? Do you think i should phone up Apple in the morning and speak to someone about it first or just turn up at an Apple store 'all fire and brimstone'
(i'll be very nice actually, it doesn't pay to get angry with shop staff! - Maybe they'll throw in a freebie - 2.8GHz upgrade !?)
What's the process for uninstalling everything? Do i just put the OS install disks in and follow the instructions for a clean install of leopard?

Hmmm, my apologies, I thought there were already enough threads about the gradient issue (and not exclusively on this forum)
I must have been wrong...
Just boot from the install disks, select a language, open Disk Utility.app
(under "Utilities" on the menu bar), and erase the drive -- after selecting
the "zero-fill" Security Option.
Don't bother to reload anything. Apple won't reuse a customer-installed OS;
they'll do their own re-imaging before repairing/reselling it.
