Hi guys,

since a few days i own an iPad Pro 2020 and wanted to take some photos for ebay with it, because the camera should be better than the camera of my iPhone 8.

Already when opening the camera app I noticed how grainy everything looks. The photos were a bit better than what I saw directly on the display when shooting the photos, but still the quality was absolutely not satisfying.

As a comparison I took photos with my iPhone 8 and the resolution was much better, everything was sharper.

As a comparison I took pictures of my PowerPort, with flash and without. The first two are from the iPad, the last two from the iPhone.

Maybe I'm just missing something, but why does my iPad Pro take so much worse photos than my iPhone 8?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Is it because the camera isn't optically stabilized?

Im with you. I dont plan to use the camera at all but i thought id test it out when i got my 12.9. Its better than my iphone 7 plus but not by much. Doesnt seem like there has been much improvement in the cameras in the last 4-5 years. Also not being able to do portrait mode with the rear camera is an odd decision.

Did Apple seriously not add this back in to the Pro models for 2020?! There’s no excuse not to have this feature in an $800+ tablet.

My 10.5 Pro has it and it comes in handy when I need to take a quick photo/video.

Very late response

All the iPad Pro after the 10.5“ generation no longer have OIS on the camera, as result it has to shorten the shutter speed to reduce blur from shaky hand (because they no longer have OIS to compensate for camera shakes), however to keep the brightness stay the same it has to ramp up the ISO, unfortunately higher ISO on small sensor like phone and tablet tend to generate a lot of noise.

The iPad Pro 2018 have similar sensor and optics to the iPhone Xr minus the OIS, the lack of OIS though make the low light photography get worse compared to the iPhone 8 that has OIS but with smaller and older sensor.
