Good thing i joined the club. I activated mine yesterday 7am. As of today my data usage is less than 500mb. It was a test though. I completely disabled the wifi. I played 2 episodes of modern family, maybe 10ish youtube video (moose and zee) my 13month old daughter likes it. Most of them are like over 1min. Browse web most of the time this website, facebook etc.. I have my Safari VM activated. No streaming music but i plan to buy a dock and stream pandora.

Im glad i have the granfathered plan. Question now is how long it will last?

Is it true that as soon as you go through a single month without using 3G you lose your grandfathered status?

I knew that. My question was to the OP to see if he understood what it meant to be grandfathered in.... which essentially makes it the same as a contract plan. (without the termination fee).

I apologize for the obtuse wording of my previous post.
 
But who really wins here? Seems like it's lose-lose all around. We lose the ability to having unlimited service only for months we need it and ATT has to provide more bandwidth now that users like you (and tomorrow me), will be going unlimited and if not shutting off WiFi altogether certainly using more 3G than originally planned.

The true win here would be IF ATT allowed customers who set up accounts by tomorrow to turn on/off unlimited at will as was originally advertised. ATT says it's trying to conserve bandwidth. They are either liars or stupid enough to think this change will do that.
 
i am planning to pay this without missing any month on it. $30 seems to be worth it.
 
Its called Bait and Switch... the iphone would have failed without unlimited plans.. even if people dont use as much.. not all.. but its to do with perception. You get secured in your head that you need not worry about extra data usage charges.

Crap! This is like going to the model of Data that we have in India.

How do you figure it's "lose-lose"? 98% of us are going to spend less money than we were before. Also, this is likely to cause people to be a bit more careful about making sure they are on WiFi whenever possible as well as keep some of the top 2% data hogs in check. Also, why would anybody shut off their WiFi and use 3G only?
 
Slightly off topic, but how do you make sure that 3G is set to auto renew? I've been searching throughout the setting and can't find the option anywhere.
 
I wonder how long before AT&T figures out a way to throttle the high users? Here you go, here is your unlimited at old modem speeds.

In an unofficial poll of my friends on AT&T we were averaging around 500mb a month. And, we ALL thought we were heavy users. I'm sure AT&T is happy everyone is locking in the full amount.
 
Just grandfathered myself as well. Going to monitor usage this first month all 3G, no wifi and see how it goes. For a few extra bucks I'd rather not worry about going over

I plan on doing the same and keep renewing each month to keep taking advantage of the "unlimited data", but I will remain on 3G and turn off wifi.

Wait until the rolling blackouts begin, we will not even have to concern ourselves with little details like cooking dinner. My power company has been bought up so many times that when I throw a switch these days, it's actually Iberdrola SA (Spain) whose balance sheet is on the other end of the circuit. I try not to think about that when I read about the allegedly shaky state of the whole eurozone.

But meanwhile, I want to be able to use iPad on 3g when I am not home, because I would prefer that to using public WiFi. So I was unhappy when an AT&T salesperson said to me today that I would not be able to get an iPad data plan at all if my billing zipcode is not in an AT&T coverage area. I am still trying to find out if that is true or not. I ordered the 3G option for my iPad, on May 22. I hope I did not spend the extra $130 on cell option for no reason! What does my billing zipcode have to do with my desire to use the iPad sometime in, say, Chicago, or Atlanta? I know I live in a dead zone, that is not where I would use the iPad in cellular mode. I'd use it on WiFi to my own DSL when I am home. It's when I'm NOT home that I would want to be able to use the iPad via cellular access to the internet.
