Graphic card problem of my Mac Pro

My Mac Pro setting

Mac Pro Mid 2007 (Mac Pro 1,1)
2x Xeon 2.66
8800GT (Slot 1) + 7300GT (Slot 3 @ PCI-E 4x)
7GB Ram
2 Monitors (u2711 @ 8800GT Port 1 , Samsung 19inch @ 7300GT Port 1)
Lion 10.7.2

I used this setting for 1-2 year without any problem.

Now the system have the problem shown below: (cause in Lion , Lion Recovery , Snow Leopard DVD)

1. Main Screen Freeze in Boot Screen , Second Screen show Login Screen and I can use it in second monitor or Sharing Screen
2. TWO monitor no signal, I can use sharing Screen remote computer
3. Remove 8800GT, plug 73GT in Slot 1 , only Port 1 have signal, port 2 can detect second monitor but can't see anything
4. Remove 7300GT , plug 8800GT only, Freeze at boot screen in Port 1 , Port 2 No Signal, Can use Share Screen remote the Mac
5. Work without any problem for very short time now.


Is the graphic card/s problem? I tried to remove / change the Ram, Hard Drive and PCI-E Card.

The 8800GT has joined the ranks of the dead.

Bake it or throw it away.

The 7300GT can only run the U2711 on it's lower port (nearest the slot)

I imagine you have been trying to connect the U2711 on upper port, that will give no display.

Bake the 8800GT before you spend any money on a replacement. You have 50/50 odds of it working and literally nothing to lose.

Tried connect two 19 inch (1280x 1024) Monitor to 7300GT
Monitor connected to Port 2 can detect but no signal

looks like you have 2 dead/dying cards.

You may have heat issue in your Mac.

Bake the 88GT and see what happens

Work fine after boot

Can you please explain what you mean by "bake the 8800GT" and "you may have a heat issue"

I'm having a similar problem in my MP 3,1 and am thinking of replacing with a 5770.

They mean it literally

put the 8800gt in the oven and bake it, the solder will melt and fill the cracks caused by all the heating/cooling cycles.

google it.
