Good evening all,

I have been observing some graphics degradation going from Catalina to Monterey in the following ways:

1. Main, and most annoying, issue (on Monterey): when playing an online game via browser (I play mainly Mahjong Solitaire from Arkadium), the animations will start smooth 60 fps, then become choppy and stuttering. This happens on Safari, Firefox (less so), and Chrome (worse). I have tweaked the experimental Webgl settings on Safari, and the others, and no improvement.

When I reinstall Catalina, both safari and Firefox are silky smooth. Chrome remains choppy.

2. System UI animations get choppy often, but not constant.

3. Mouse/cursor is rock solid on Catalina, but has micro stuttering on Monterey. I use a wired logi mouse with 1000 hz poll rate on both OS.

If anyone else can chime in if they notice similar things, or have any input? I’ve done many google searches for these issues, and I haven’t come across a similar issue (mainly with respect to point 1).

Thanks for reading!

Did you check in Activity Monitor if the browsers are consuming more memory? On the bottom, you will see Swap Space utilization. If it grows, then this might be the issue.

My Big Sur 11.6.2 is exhibiting memory leaks in both Chrome and Safari (not as aggressive leak as Chrome)

Thanks for replying. Yes, I’ve used Activity Monitor, and there is not excess memory usage by any browser. I have plenty of free ram, and no swap usage.

Ok, your Mac without HDD, right? APFS is lousy on it.

In any case, you can install both systems on your Mac, if it's necessary (dual-boot)
But if you have HDD – beware of Monterey, which does not support non-APFS for boot.

Hi, I use the internal ssd (28 gb), with external crucial x5 ssd in Fusion config on my 2019 iMac. My 2020 iMac has 512 gb internal ssd.

For now, I’ve installed Catalina on both, which has eliminated the graphical lag for the most part. Only remaining lag is my mx anywhere 3 mouse (using the usb wireless dongle). Wired mouse much smoother.
