My GFX card is down. I need a new one. I'm on a Mac Pro 2008 2.8 ghz Quad core.
I'm still running os version 10.5.8.

I want to get a apple radeon hd 5770. Am I going to have to upgrade to a newer os? I can only run in safe mode Is it possible to update the os in safe mode, or any other way to get a 5770 running with only being able to run in safe mode.

thanks.

hang on? you can run in safe mode, but your vid card is not working?

what card is it and what seems to be the problem?

its a ati 2600

I'm running 10.5.8

I think its my gfx card. Every once in a while my computer would shut down only when watching movies, viewing high res pic,s or running things to my 1080p tv,it would freeze, bring up a message and i would have to restart.( i don't have the error code) I'd some time get artifacts covering different windows sometimes whole screen then restart.

I could hear, the fan on the GFX card struggling. I'm sure it was that fan. It just ran real loud. IT got worse and worse. Now when i try to boot up in regular mode it's louder than ever then the screen goes black and the monitor eventually says signal out of range.. After I couldn't boot up I cleaned it got a good dust bunny out ,but i still cant boot up. The whole computer needs a cleaning.

Now it wont get pass the boot screen unless i start it up in safe mode.

Right now i have a artifact box following my pointer in safe mode

Hope its the gfx card, I wanted to upgrade it anyway.
