I have a mac pro 1,1 (upgraded to 2,1) tower 24GB of Ram with with two Quad core INTEL XEON X5355 2.66GHZ processors making 8 CORE. The current Graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4870. I am getting kernel panics when I'm working on large audio mixing / editing sessions in pro tools 10. These panics happen after 2 hours or more of work on sessions that are using a lot of cpu and once the mac us running really hot, and the kernel panics show the graphics card is the problem.

The graphics card was recently replaced and I am having not other problems usually associated with failing graphics cards such as blue screens scrambling graphics etc. it looks like the graphics hard is overheating when the mac is getting hot and causing the panics.

I have seen that is software called Smc Fan control and thinking this will help if I run this when working on large sessions, I'm using os10.6.8 so I wonder if anyone knows which version of that I need to run, and what fans on the mac pro would need to be speeded up to cool graphics card and poss cpu. And also what are good speed settings to use?

I'm also wondering about any other methods to cool graphics card and cpu, external fans? Settings that can be changed to graphics?

The very 1st thing to do. Apply compressed air from the back of the card (you better do it at out door). A 4870 is a very old card, there may be lots of dust in the heatsink. Which can greatly reduce the efficiency of the overall cooling ability.

If that doesn't help, consider re-paste the GPU. For the age of 4870, very likely the thermal paste already dried up.

I am not familiar with the 1,1's dan design. If there is a fan for the PCIe slot, increase that one via SMC fan control can also help the GPU cooling.

Thanks for the help. So also an upgrade of the graphics card to a new model would poss help as well then? Can you suggest some suitable replacement cards that would work on my model and would just be swapped for the current one. Ideally one that can still be purchased new?

It has 4 fans: CPU/RAM, PCI slot, PSU and Exhaust. So, yes, it can be done and i would do it to, to see if there are some changes afterwards.

The only ones that you can, hopefully, purchase new are R9 280 and 280X (equivalents to HD7950 and HD7970 GHz).
They can be flashed very easily to show boot screens and be recognized as genuine apple cards. But you'll have to go for reference design cards with DVI, HDMI and two mini Display ports if you want them to work 100%. Sapphire reference, MSI and Gigabyte are the safest bets AFAIK.

Thanks, I see you posted screen shot from Macs Facebook control, would that be a better program totry instead of smc fan control? As it looks like that program changes fan speeds based on what temperatures it finds parts are running at.

Sorry, didn't see that the OP is using 10.6.8.
On the other hand Pro Tools 10 works great in Mountain Lion and Mavericks (there are just couple minor glitches with some 3rd party virtual instruments, don't remember which but I'm sure that is is on Avid's web site).
Btw, i have never used PT for midi and virtual instruments. For that i use Logic.

You're right, thats the program i use for three reasons:
- you have sensor based fan control so you can assign fan to temperature - i keep PSU under 50C, so fan starts speeding up at 43C and max allowed is 60C;
- you can type exact RPM you wish - iStat Menus has only sliders for fan speeds
- you can download Windows version also (from the same site) to use in your Bootcamp.

Thanks for those settings that's really useful. What are the other settings you use e.g cpu, and other fans.

Not a problem at all. The other fans, as you can see, are all set to automatic.

Before i got 8GB (4x2GB) of Samsung RAM i used to adjust CPU Fan and Exhaust (since they are on the same horizontal path) to keep my Northbridge under 70C, but since the RAM i bought has temperature sensors in it, Apple's SMC i keeping those fans up by 150-200 RPM all the time so it just cools itself now. I also disassembled my Mac and blew the dust with compressed air, so the temp of the Northbridge went down by 20C by itself before i even got the ram.

IO or PCI/HD/Expansion fan i never touched. I have only GPU there, it first was Gigabyte 7950 Windforce and now it is MSI 7950, so they cool themselves enough, no need for help at the moment.

I am attaching screenshot from iStat Menus so you can see those 4 RAM sticks that have temp sensors and are not giving those two fans (CPU and Exhaust) to stay at stock RPM (500 and 600 RPM).

Following your help, I blew dust our of graphics card and installed fan control. Had no more graphics card kernel panics following that, but then yesterday I started having different kernel panic.

Can someone help me work out what these kernel panics mean that I have had over last couple of days are and how to fix / avoid them?

I'm running pro tools 10 on os10.6.8 and when these panics are happening I am using a lot of plugins as well as ssl duende firewire and uad firewire dsp units all on ther own dedicated firewire busses, and the sessions do have a lot of audio tracks, so I am using a lot of CPU.

I wondered if issue is that I'm just pushing the cpu to much? Within pro tools setting I have assigned the 8 cores if cpu to pro tools, and it's allocated to access up to 95%. Below are the two recent kernel panic reports

First report happened today whilest in pro tools session and selecting to save as:

I'm not sure what is causing your panics, but can share what would i do in this situation. :)

Mbox is known to cause system wide panics if hot-swapped even if Pro Tools isn't running (plugged and unplugged if Mac is on). I don't know if and when Avid sorted that out but it is one thing to have in mind.
If you have ever done it, it is possible that your PRAM got corrupted, so resetting PRAM should be first thing on your list.

Second thing that i would do is trash Pro Tools preferences, but i really don't think that is the issue.

Then, because we want to assume that hardware is ok and don't want to mess up with your current working setup :) I would take a spare HDD (anything that you have lying around), install fresh Snow Leopard with Pro Tools and then add one by one of your interfaces - install drivers following manuals to a letter (aka don't connect your interface until installer asks you to) - and stress your Mac with some PT project hard as you can.
I'm hoping that panics are caused by some third party drivers (mbox?) but trying to avoid messing with setup you have now, this is the safest way to take (AFAIK of course).
