MP 1,1-5,1 Graphics Card problem

I’m currently running a radeon r9-280x cardvin my flashed 2009/2010 5,1 machine.
It’s a 12 core machine.
Trying to install high Sierra to go on to Mojave so I put a GT120 card in the machine.
I’m getting a grey Apple screen with a progress bar that stops at the halfway mark and then everything goes blank.
What am I doing wrong?

Is your r9 280 card a Mac card or PC version? As far as I know, GT120 isn't supported for Mojave which might explain the progress bar issue. Also, running Nvidia and AMD cards together creates a world of problems.

The R9 version is flashable with a Mac ROM to provide pre boot configuration screens that will make installing Mojave much easier. There's a forum post about it here, but no idea if yours is a PC ROM version....

The only card I had installed was the GT-120.
The only reason I wanted this in the machine is to upgrade to the firmware to run high Sierra.
My 280 runs flawlessly

You didn't say whether your R9 280X has been EFI flashed.
If it is EFI flashed then it is all you need to upgrade to Mojave. Remove or disconnect the GT120.

You should make a SIGNATURE in your macrumors account Profile - mine is at the bottom of this post.

The R9 280X is basically an upgraded HD 7970.

The Netkas site has all the info - Google netkas + R9 280X ( Tonight the netkas website is down but it usually comes back to life.

I think I’m explaining things wrong.
My machine is a flashed 2009 model, now recognized as a 2010 model, it’s been upgraded to a 12 core machine. I’m running Sierra.
When I install my original graphics , the GT 120, the screen is grey with the Apple logo and a progress bar.
The progress bar stops at the midway mark and then the screen goes black.
There is no other graphics card installed when doing this.
I need the original card installed to upgrade to high sierra

I am assuming that when you flashed your firmware to 5,1 and upgraded from El-Cap to Sierra, you were using only the GT-120 to do that? If so and now you want to update to High Sierra on your way to Mojave, the Mac Pro won't allow you to go further with the GT-120 which would indicate to me that your GT-120 is the culprit since your R9 290X card works just fine. Try to see if you can get ahold of another GT-120 or a GT-630 Mac Edition (with Mac EFI rom). My Mac Pro 5,1 with High Sierra currently has both the GT-120 as the boot screen and the AMD RX580 as my work screen.
 
OP: Have you tried waiting it out? (the black screen).

I just updated EFI on a 5,1 from original all the way to 144, and there were several extended periods when it seemed nothing was happening, screen was black, and then suddenly, the machine sprang back to life.
