I have a MacPro 1,1 and the graphics card died. I'm not sure if I want to replace the card, though I'm thinking of doing so just to use the Mac to access the files on the internal drives for tagging in Lightroom.

1. Can anyone recommend a graphics card that will be good enough for just viewing photos and videos in Lightroom?

2. Is it a bad idea to buy a used graphics card?

Thanks.

You can try putting in Radeon 5770HD There's a guy who installed a Nvidia 570GTX in his 1.1 Mac Pro HERE

Thank you for your responses.

My Macpro shipped with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB
It is the 2 X 3 GHz Dual-Core MP.

I'm thinking of keeping it around for storing lots of photos and videos and possible streaming Netflix.

1. Which card will work for what I want to do?
2. Will it make much difference in performance/capabilities with this old beast if I spend more for a higher end card?

Thanks.

So are these my only options?

NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT

Radeon 5770HD
Nvidia 570GTX

Thanks.

Check out the stickied NVIDIA PC GPU Thread at the top of this forum. Your GPU selection is limited by which OS you are running. Basically any non-keppler NVIDIA card will work in 10.7.5 without a boot screen, with significantly better performance over any "Apple Branded" card.

You can also try the Radeon 5870HD. There is an previous Macrumors thread about this https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1002004/

The Nvidia Quadra FX4500 also works in a 1.1 Mac Pro. As far as I know, if the video card is EFI64 it would not work in a 1.1 Mac Pro since its logicboard is EFI32 Try to avoid the Nvidia 7300GT as it usually breaks down. I had 2 7300GTs that broke down when I had my 1.1 Mac Pro. There's an old MR thread on that though I could not locate the URL

yes it works but it might be not usefull with open GL, the hardware is old, but you will have good result with octane

If you don't have a boot screen, doesn't that make it difficult to change your boot drive? For instance, choosing to boot off of USB drive, or time machine?

Are you meaning that nvidia isn't so good with openGL?
I first thought to buy radeon, but since adobe's apps still need cuda, I reconsidered and fcpX (if I start to use it) works with both.
