As can be seen below I run a 2009 4.1 Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 6 GB RAM XFX Radeon HD 6870

Can anyone recommend a better graphics card with a mini display port option that would be fit and forget in my machine ?

Thanks

I go to my local computer store. In your town, I am not sure if it's the best option. Or it's easier for you to buy it online.

I personally won't suggest you go for the used flashed card (unless from the trusted seller e.g. MVC). If you are now running a non-flashed 6870, then a non-flashed 7950 / R9 280 won't be any problem for you.

Just be careful, if you have no plan to mod your 4,1 (or using extra PSU), choose the 2x6pin card will keep your 4,1 safe.

Anybody know where in the UK I can purchase a flashed or not AMD Radeon 7950 3GB or a HIS R9 280 ICEQ ?

Or any other suggestions as to what I should buy to replace what I have.

The HD 7950 isn't produced any more (neither Mac Edition nor normal PC version), but you'll still find used ones at ebay (around 150€ I guess).
Just get one with with 2 miniDisplayPorts, 1 HDMI and 2 DVI, this will be flashable for Mac.

Btw, before recommending a specific card to you it would be interesting to know what you're planning to do and why you want to upgrade. Gaming? Pro Apps with GPGPU? 4K? Many screens?

Thanks for the reply, gaming is the answer.

Just bought an AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB Flashed from Ebay, asked the seller a couple of questions and got the replies I wanted so took the plunge.
