i personally think that apple downgraded the graphics abilities of the new iMacs.
currently the best is
20-inch model with 2.4GHz processor and 24-inch model

* ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor
* 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Mini-DVI output port with support for DVI, VGA, S-video, and composite video connections via adapter

the old iMacs had the
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 256MB of GDDR2 SDRAM

i think, the NVIDIA is better than ATI.
what do u think?

second question, why is there no option for higher graphics abilities like the

# ATI Radeon X1900 XT with 512MB of GDDR3 SDRAM and two dual-link DVI ports
# NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 with 512MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, two dual-link DVI ports, and one stereo 3D port

Note: i am copying these options from the Mac Pro Tech Specs section

is there any issue with installing these graphics cards into the iMac? or just apple thinks they are too expensive for iMacs.

do u think, 256MB is enough for iMacs?

i am planning to buy the 24'' 2.8 extreme but not convinced by its graphics ability.

There are loads of threads here on the new iMacs graphics cards. search for 2600xt.

The iMacs do not have 2600PROs. They are underclocked Mobility 2600XTs. They outperform the 7300GTs by over 2:1 in 3dmark06. The X1900 and Quadro cards are too big and power hungry and hot to put in the slim casing of the iMacs.
