Graphics Update Question

Hi there,

I have a recently purchased 2009 Mac pro with the original GE force GT 120 GPU. I have been playing Call of DUty and the graphics are a little lacking. I am exploring my options for an update. Seems like the 5770 or 5780 are the way to go.

My questions are:

Would the 5770 be a noticeable upgrade in terms of game graphics? Why is this card not supported by Apple for my machine?


Is the 5780 worth the extra $200?

Is either card hard to install after removing the old card?

If you're playing Call of Duty or any other modern FPS, I think the extra $ for the 5870 is certainly worth it. I upgraded my box from the 4870 (equivalent to the current 5770) to the 5870 and was able to raise the graphics quality in games like TF2 and L4D2 and still get a bump in frame rate.

The cards are very easy to install--you just disconnect the power leads and pop out the old one, seat the new card in the same slot, connect the power leads and you're good to go.

The 5770 allows me to run my games on maximum settings at 1920x1200. However, I have a base model 2010 and I use boot camp for gaming.

the cards are listed as not supported because apple want you to buy a new machine.


in reality it works just fine and there is no technology barrier to prevent it from doing so.


a 5770 will run CoD just fine. but in 3 months you will probably want to play another game. go for the 5870.
