Gray boxes in Acrobat 7 pro

I've created a 3 page document in indesign, exported it as PDF (using acrobat 4 backwards compatibility). It displays fine in Reader and preview, but in Acrobat pro it just shows gray boxes where the graphics should be. Any ideas why?

This first thing to check: in Acrobat's preferences, under the Page Display section, is "Display large images" checked?
