Well this was inevitable...as if we aren't bombarded with enough ads within a day...

Just use adblocker everywhere you can and don't use this app.

I am using ad blockers, Crystal. I had been using the app from time to time before just to see how it compares to Flipboard, and this is the first I've seen of ads. To bad ad blockers don't work within apps other than Safari.

For in app ads, use WeBlock.

It's local. I wouldn't use nor recommend if it was thru someone else's computer.

If you believe some of the theories, one of the reasons Apple allowed content blockers was so they could push people to advertise in News app that wouldn't be blocked. Paranoid? Cynical? On to something? Guess we can make our own decision. It wouldn't entirely shock me if true though.
